Eagles Fly by Delaware State, 63-44, for Third Straight Home Win


DURHAM, N.C. – Junior guard Kimia Carter scored a season-high 15 points to top North Carolina Central University's scorers in a 63-44 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball home victory over Delaware State University on Saturday afternoon.
 
Sophomore Morgan Callahan and junior Kimeira Burks joined Carter in the double-digit scoring column with 12 and 11 points respectively. Carter and Burks both swish a trio of 3-pointers and Callahan led the Eagles with eight rebounds and three blocks.
 
Senior Kira Lowery was NCCU's top playmaker, dishing out a season-high 11 assists on NCCU's 24 made field goals.
 
NC Central won its third consecutive home game to improve to 8-11 on the season while leveling its league ledger to 2-2. The Hornets slipped to 3-12 and 1-3.
 
NCCU defense, which entered the day ranked fourth nationally in turnovers forced per game, held Delaware State to just one made field goal in the first quarter on the way to constructing a 13-4 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
 
The Eagles kept defending well and they extended their cushion to 21 points before DSU finally made its second field goal of the contest with just over five minutes left on the clock in the second quarter. The Hornets committed 15 of its 22 turnovers in the first half and shot just 15 percent from the field before the midway break.
 
The maroon and gray cushion grew to 23 points (33-10) at halftime with junior Tippy Robertson drilling NCCU's sixth made 3-pointer of the half at the buzzer on a pass by Burks, who accounted for three of those treys for a team-high nine points at the intermission.
 
NCCU maintained a sizable lead throughout the second half in a contest it never trailed.
 
The Eagles had assists on 21 of their 24 total made field goals and finished with a 42-32 rebounding advantage. NCCU received 37 bench points, scored 28 points in the paint and 22 points on the fast break.
 
Freshman Savannah Brooks and sophomore Joy Watkins led Delaware State with nine points apiece.
 
Up next, NC Central will host University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
