NCCU Drops First Two at PC Invite to Host Blue Hose

CLINTON, S.C. – Sophomore Jaylah Barr drove in the only runs for the North Carolina Central University softball team in a 14-0 and 10-2 doubleheader loss to host Presbyterian College on day one of the PC Invitational Friday.

NC Central (1-5 Overall) will finish up play at the PC Invite with two more games on Saturday. The Eagles will first take on the University of Detroit Mercy at 10 a.m. and then conclude play against Appalachian State University at 2:30 p.m.

PC leveled its record to 3-3 with the sweep.

GAME ONE: Presbyterian 14, NC Central 0 (5 Inn.)

Junior Jenna Greene tossed a five-inning no hitter and the Blue Hose exploded for 14 runs in the opener. Half of those runs were unearned because of a couple of NCCU errors.

Greene (1-2), who led PC in wins each of the last two seasons, has now recorded two collegiate no hitters after she kept South Carolina State University hitless in a game last season. Greene had five strikeouts.

Senior outfielder Jaiden Tweed supplied a bases-clearing, three-RBI double into the left field gap to cap a four-run first inning for PC. The Blue Hose would go on to score in all four innings they batted in and freshman Morgan Hess highlighted a seven-run third inning with a grand slam on the way to the run-rule victory. Nine different Blue Hose accounted for PC's 11 total base hits.

The Eagles did put a pair of runners on base in the third inning with freshman Ashanti Eubanks drawing a walk and junior Diamond Porter being hit by a pitch. However, a successful pickoff attempt eliminated NCCU's only scoring opportunity with a runner in scoring position.

GAME TWO: Presbyterian 10, NC Central 2

Barr put the Eagles up 2-nil with a two-run double to left field in the second inning, but PC responded with six runs in the third and four more in the fourth to complete the sweep.

The Blue Hose registered four doubles in their big third inning before Tweed capped the fourth with a two-run single. Tweed totaled drove in three PC runs for six total RBI on the day. Hess hit safely in all three of her at bats as Presbyterian tallied 11 hits total hits just like the first contest.

Hess (2-0) also took over in the pitcher's circle after NCCU took the early advantage and tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the victory with six strikeouts.

Freshman Jaidyn Hamby, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, and sophomore Hailey Batista both collected singles in the third before they both scored on Barr's double. All three of NCCU hits on the day came in that one inning.
