NCCU Suffers First Loss on the Road to FIU


MIAMI, Fla. – Sophomore Morgan Callahan was the only North Carolina Central University player to score in double digits in a 103-56 road loss at Florida International University in women's basketball action Wednesday evening.
 
FIU shot 60.5 percent from the field to start the season 1-0. The Panthers also dominated the backboards with a commanding 69-38 rebounding advantage.
 
Callahan, who made five of her eight shot attempts from the field (62.5%), has scored in double digits in both of NCCU's games this season.
 
Freshman Jerni Kiaku filled up the box score for the Eagles with eight points and team-highs of eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. Senior Kira Lowery and sophomore Nia Ford both chipped in eight points. Ford also had a game-high five blocks.
 
The Panthers scored the first 13 points of the contest and never trailed. The hosts constructed a 26-12 advantage after the first quarter and continued to lead 41-26 at halftime before controlling the third quarter, 35-14, to coast away to the 47-point victory.
 
FIU redshirt freshman Sifa Joyeuse just missed a double-double in her collegiate debut with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds. Joyeuse hit four for the FIU's 11 made 3-pointers.
 
The Eagles committed 40 turnovers in 40 minutes with sophomore Tanajah Hayes coming up with seven steals for the Panthers.
 
NC Central (1-1) will try and bounce back when the Eagles host Campbell University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
