MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard
Tippy Robertson scored a season-high 12 points to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team in an 89-58 road loss at West Virginia University on Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers shot 54.4 percent from the field, including 10 made three-pointers at 47.6 precision from behind the arc, to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Robertson had NCCU's most accurate shot, swishing four of her seven shot attempts, on the way to her dozen points. Robertson made two of NCCU's three made 3-pointers while adding four rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Senior
Kira Lowery reached double digits in the scoring column for the Eagles for a second straight outing, bucketing 11 points. Lowery also came up with a game-high six steals. Freshman
Jerni Kiaku, a two-time MEAC Rookie of the Week already this season, provided the visitors with nine points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists. Junior
Taylor Williams chipped in a season-high eight points.
Early hoops by Lowery and sophomore
Aniya Finger knotted score twice early, but NCCU never led in the contest. Lowery scored five of her 11 points in the first quarter to help keep the Eagles within single digits, 25-16, after the first quarter. However, WVU outscored the maroon and gray by 20 points, 41-21, over the next two quarters to pull away.
Fifth-year guard Madisen Smith led the Mountaineers with 20 points, including a trio of treys, and five steals.
NC Central (2-6) next plays at Chicago State University on Saturday at 2 p.m. (1 PM CST).
