WBB GAME NOTES: NCCU Hosts Campbell on Saturday


DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will try and remain undefeated at home when the Eagles host Campbell University inside McDougald-McLendon Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m.

NC CENTRAL BENCH:                                                                                      
 
The Eagles will be playing their third game of opening week on Saturday. NCCU (1-1 Overall) started the season with a 69-56 home victory over Johnson C. Smith University on Monday before suffering a 103-56 road loss at FIU.
 
Junior forward Morgan Callahan is the only Eagle to score in double digits in both of NCCU's first two games. Callahan, who is averaging 13 points per game, also ranks second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.
 
Freshman Jerni Kiaku follows Callahan with an average of 11 points per game. Kiaku is also averaging 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game while topping the squad with an average of two made 3-pointers per game.
 
Junior forward/guard Blessing Okoh had a double-double in her NCCU debut and is contributing 9.5 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game.
 
Junior Tippy Robertson and sophomore Nia Ford have both started each game so far this season. Robertson is running the point with an average of 5.0 assists per game while Ford has started her second season averaging 7.0 points and 2.5 blocks per game.
 
Senior Kira Lowery, NCCU's team MVP last season, has been held to an average of 6.0 points and 3.0 assists per game so far this campaign.
 
NC Central has won its last two games against Campbell, including a dramatic 70-65 double overtime win in the last triumph over the Camels on Nov. 25, 2020. Callahan is the only current Eagle that played in that contest, tallying four points and five rebounds in her collegiate debut game.
                                                                                                                         
CAMPBELL BENCH:
 
The Camels started their season with a triumphant 83-40 home win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Monday. Campbell (1-0) went 23-8 last season and is picked to finish third in the Big South Conference preseason poll.
 
Senior forward Brittany Staves is Campbell's top returning scorer and rebounder and she scored nine points in the opener.
 
Fifth-year guard Shy Tuelle, who has earned Big South postseason awards multiple seasons, swished seven 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 23 points against NCWC. Tuelle also had six rebounds, five assists and three blocks in that victory.
 
Tuelle played 37 minutes and scored a team-high 19 points while filling up the box score with six rebounds, two steals, two assists and one steal in Campbell's double-overtime loss to NCCU two seasons ago.
