Eagles Advance in MEAC Softball Tourney by Eliminating the Aggies

NORFOLK, Va. — Sophomore Maegan Garrison and freshman Jaylah Barr both hit their first collegiate home runs to spark the North Carolina Central University softball team to a 6-3 win over rival North Carolina A&T State University in an elimination game at the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Friday afternoon contested at the Norfolk State University Softball Field.

The Eagles will quickly turn around and play another elimination game, this time facing host Norfolk State on Friday at 6 p.m. The winner of that contest will play Morgan State University in the championship game(s) on Saturday beginning at noon.

NCCU improved to 12-30 on the season while the Aggies finish their campaign at 11-31. The Eagles defeated N.C. A&T three times in four meetings this year.

The Eagles outhit the Aggies, 10-6, with Garrison supplying a pair of extra-base hits.

Trailing by one run, Garrison blasted her first collegiate home run over the centerfield fence to tie the game. That solo homer sparked a three-run frame for the Eagles. Freshman Imara Harrell doubled and scored the go-ahead run before classmate Hailey Batista finished off the big inning with an RBI-double that scored senior Nadia Blevins.

NCCU tacked on two more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 6-2. Barr started the frame with her first homer of her rookie campaign to straightaway center. Senior K'Lea Parks later singled and eventually scored on NCAT's third error of the game, an errant throw after Garrison doubled into the left field gap.

Senior Joirea Dumas provided the Eagles with an initial 1-nil edge in the bottom of the first. Dumas ripped a double to the right field fence and later scored on the first Aggie error.

North Carolina A&T took its brief 2-1 lead on three hits in the top of the fourth. Freshman Kendall Macauley doubled to begin the frame and scored the tying run on a double by senior Stephanie Williams, who scored moments later on a single by senior Hailee Cutts. The Aggies tacked on their last run on a pinch-hit solo homer by senior Samantha Ramirez in the seventh inning.

Senior Kiara Hurley (8-17), a two-time All-MEAC honoree, tossed a complete-game victory for the Eagles. Hurley struck out four Aggies.
