ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Freshman
Stipan Madzar registered the only point for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team in a 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division road loss at South Carolina State University on Saturday morning.
Madzar won his match at the top slot in NCCU's lineup, defeating junior Aleska Daskalovic in straight sets. His 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph was his second straight win and it moved his singles record over .500 on his rookie season at 4-3. Madzar is 2-0 against league opposition.
The Bulldogs clinched the MEAC Southern Division title with the victory and the Eagles were eliminated from MEAC postseason consideration with the loss. South Carolina State improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the division while NCCU dropped to 1-6 and 0-2.
Senior
Miles Clark and
Amit Baran also got in the win column for the maroon and gray in doubles action. The NCCU duo tallied a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles over senior Marcelo Rodriguez and freshman Elyes Marouani. It was the second doubles victory of the season for Clark and Baran.
However, SCSU secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win on the second court. The Bulldogs then finished off the team victory with straight-set victories at the fifth, third and second slots in the lineup.
In the tightest singles match of the day, junior Omer Berk Gorgun held off junior
Sebastian Pino in a superset tiebreaker to end the match. Gorgun rallied to win the close affair by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.
NC Central will conclude its season with two home matches on the weekend of April 17-18, beginning with a dual match against Wake Forest University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
