Eagles Unable to Overcome Costly Turnovers

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina A&T State University women's basketball team closed the final 15 minutes of the game on a 43-18 run to pick up an 84-54 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division victory over North Carolina Central University Saturday afternoon at the Corbett Sports Center.

Junior Kiyana Brown and sophomore Anissa Rivera led the Eagles with 10 points apiece. Rivera completed her sixth double-double of the season with a season-high 15 rebounds. Rivera also led NCCU with four blocks.

Seniors Chanin Scott and Deja Winters accounted for over half of NCAT's points with 23 and 20 points, respectively.

The Aggies only led by five points midway through the third quarter before going on their closing run with the help of mistakes by the Eagles. N.C. A&T (11-2 Overall, 8-1 MEAC) turned 30 NCCU turnovers into 39 extra points. The Eagles committed 18 of those turnovers in the second half.

The Aggies doubled up the Eagles 14-7 at the first media timeout with Winters making a pair of 3-pointers in the opening run and they never relinquished the lead from that point. Sophomore Faith Williams got NCCU within three points with her own trey at the 2:44 mark, but N.C. A&T scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 21-12 lead.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run to narrow the gap to six points, 27-21, in the early stages of the second quarter, which featured jumpers by freshman Promise Cunningham and Rivera, a layup by Brown and a 3-pointer by sophomore Madalyn Anderson.

However, NCCU was held without a field goal for the final five minutes of the half. The Aggies closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 37-23 at halftime.

The Eagles made another rally to start a period. NCCU began the third quarter on a 13-4 run that included Rivera swishing three shots before sophomore Nyasia Palmer capped surge with a 3-pointer to get the visitors within two possessions once again at 41-36.

The Aggies responded the same way by holding the Eagles scoreless for the final five minutes. After the media timeout N.C. A&T scored 19 unanswered points to take a 60-36 advantage into the fourth quarter before eventually completing its second 30-point win over NCCU this season.

Williams finished with nine points and Palmer made a pair of 3-pointers for six points.

NC Central will play another game at N.C. A&T on Sunday at 2 p.m.
