Ground Attack Powers NCCU to 45-27 Win over Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – North Carolina Central University amassed 530 yards of total offense, including 293 yards and six touchdowns rushing, to power the Eagles past Howard University, 45-27, on Saturday afternoon inside Greene Stadium.

NCCU's 530 total yards are the Eagles' most yards of total offense against a MEAC opponent since tallying 545 yards at Savannah State on Sept. 22, 2012. The six rushing touchdowns are the most by the Eagles in more than 20 years, while the 45 points are the most scored by NCCU against a conference foe since a 47-13 win over Hampton on Nov. 8, 2014.

Sophomore running back Latrell Collier achieved NCCU's top rushing performance this season with 115 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, averaging 8.8 yards per carry. Isaiah Totten moved to fourth on NCCU's career rushing list with 63 yards and a score on Saturday, increasing his total to 2,413 career rushing yards.

Quarterback Davius Richard, who passed for 237 yards, contributed 42 yards and two touchdowns rushing, Jorden Freeman registered 35 rushing yards with a trip to the end zone, and Josh Pullen added 33 yards.

Andrew Smith topped NCCU's receiving corps with five catches for 94 yards, while Devin Smith collected four receptions for 59 yards.

NCCU's defense was led by cornerback JaJuan Hudson with five tackles and a blocked kick, and linebacker Noah Rainbow-Douglas with five stops and a fumble recovery. Tre Turner recorded three takedowns with 1.5 sacks, while defensive back Kole Jones was involved with two takeaways with an interception and a forced fumble.

Howard (2-8, 1-4 MEAC) was topped by quarterback Quinton Williams with 313 yards and a touchdown passing, while also running for a score.

NCCU (5-5, 3-1 MEAC) closes out its season next Saturday, Nov. 20, hosting Delaware State at 2 p.m. inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. An Eagles' win and a victory by Norfolk State over South Carolina State would give NCCU a share of the MEAC championship.
