HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team got in the win column for a third straight match after beginning its spring break road trip to the Hilton Head Spring TennisFest with a 6-1 non-conference victory over fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member Norfolk State University Sunday afternoon at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
NCCU (3-7) is 2-0 against institutions from the MEAC. However, both wins against Northern Division teams (NSU and Howard University) do not count on NCCU's MEAC Southern Division ledger.
The five Eagles who won in singles on Sunday have all won three consecutive matches during NCCU's winning streak.
Sophomore
Thanos Spyropoulos – the reigning MEAC Player of the Week – continued his hot play with a noteworthy win atop NCCU's lineup. Spyropoulos knocked off senior Vini Da Silva, who was named First Team All-MEAC last year, in straight-set scores of 7-6 (3) and 6-3.
Sophomore
Amit Baran also notched a win against a former All-MEAC selection. Senior Andres Alcaraz, who garnered First Team All-MEAC accolades in 2018, retired after the first set to give Baran the No. 2 singles win. Baran was leading that match at that point, taking the first set 6-1.
Sophomore No. 3
Christos Dagklis survived a pair of close sets to edge senior Augustin Carrizo by a score of 6-4, 7-5. Senior No. 5
Pablo Juez Torres netted his 6-0, 6-3 triumph over freshman Ibrahim Abbas. Senior No. 6
Sebastian Bromley started NCCU's singles scoring with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 conquest of sophomore Anderson Brickhouse.
Norfolk State (0-3) was able to avoid the shutout with a win on court four, where senior Ignacio Guevel outlasted NCCU junior
Miles Clark in the only three-set affair by a margin of 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.
A 6-3 win by Spyropoulos and Dagklis and a 6-4 victory by Baran and Clark provided the maroon and gray with triumphs in both doubles matches contested. The Spartans forfeited the third flight.
NC Central will continue play in the Hilton Head Spring TennisFest by next playing Saint Louis University at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
