Eagles Nip Lady Bulldogs for Fourth Straight Win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Four Eagles scored in double figures to propel the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to a 55-49 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road win at South Carolina State University Saturday afternoon.

NCCU (11-16 Overall, 8-6 MEAC) has won four straight games, which is the first four-game win streak for the Eagles in over a decade since winning four consecutive contests in January of 2010. The Eagles, who are now guaranteed to finish with their first .500 or better league record since joining the MEAC in 2011-12, also moved into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with Delaware State University as the Hornets lost on Saturday to University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Senior guard Kieche White scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs pulled within four points twice in the final frame, but White drew a foul and made a pair of free throws each ensuing NCCU possession to keep the Eagles ahead until the final buzzer.

Senior forward Paulina Afriyie recorded her 12th double-double for the maroon and gray with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate guard Zaria Atkins and freshman forward Anissa Rivera both added 10 points.

Defensively, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week in Afriyie added four steals to her 10 rebounds. Rivera is coming off her fifth MEAC Rookie of the Week honors and continued to fill up the box score by contributed five blocks and nine rebounds.

South Carolina State (3-25, 2-13) led for most of the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs were trying to win on their Senior Day. NCCU committed 15 of their 23 turnovers in the first half, but a strong defensive effort in the second quarter propelled the Eagles into the lead, 19-13, at halftime. NC Central held SCSU to just three points in the second 10-minute stanza, which proved too costly for the Lady Bulldogs as both teams scored 22 points in the third and 14 points in the fourth.

NCCU shot 44-percent from the field and held South Carolina St. to just 28.3-percent. The Eagles were outrebounded 15-10 in the first quarter, but then controlled the boards, 31-20, for the last three periods to finish with a 41-35 surplus on the glass.

Junior Jacquece Alston posted a double-double for SCSU with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Chrisana Scott matched Alston in her final home game with a dozen points.

NC Central will go for a fifth-straight win on Monday, but will have a tough test in McDougald-McLendon Arena against Bethune-Cookman University at 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats have already clinched at least a share of the MEAC regular season title.
