MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — The North Carolina Central University softball team held an early two-run lead, but host College of Charleston score the next four runs and held the Eagles off the scoreboard over the final five innings to squeak out a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon.
Freshman right fielder
Sanajae Sankey had NCCU's biggest hit of the day with an RBI-single in the second to give the Eagles their 2-nil edge.
The Eagles finished with a 7-5 hit advantage, but five of those hits came in the first two innings on senior starter Chandler Sparkman. Sophomore reliever Drayton Siegling (1-2) tossed the next five innings for Charleston and she limited NCCU to just a pair of hits for her first win of the season.
NCCU quickly got on the board as senior
Tamiera Sanchez led off the contest with a double to left field and junior
Nadia Blevins followed with single to put runners on the corners with no outs. The Cougars were able to turn an ensuing double play, but Sanchez was able to score to put the Eagles on the board.
Sankey doubled-up that cushion with her single through the right side of the infield in the second to plate freshman
Maegan Garrison, who got on base with a double to right field.
A two-run homer by junior Alondra Vicary knotted the score in the bottom of the second. The Cougars added two more runs in the third – one of which was unearned – to take the lead they would not relinquish. Senior Lexee Emanuel highlighted that frame for the hosts with an RBI-single.
Siegling retired the first seven batters she faced over her first 2 1/3 innings of relief work before NCCU threatened one last time. Sanchez and Blevins collected their second hits of the day as they belted back-to-back hits for a second time. However, Siegling settled back down and she retired seven consecutive Eagles for a second time to finish the game.
Charleston improved to 4-8 on the season while NCCU dipped to 0-8.
Junior
Kiara Hurley (0-5) tossed a quality start (defined as five-plus innings with three or fewer earned runs allowed), but suffered the loss with just two runs of support.
