Two Shutout Wins Complete Series Sweep for NCCU Softball

CARY, N.C. — Sophomore Kiara Hurley and senior Claire Eosso both tossed complete game shutouts as the North Carolina Central University softball team swept a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division doubleheader against South Carolina State University, 3-0 and 12-0, Saturday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park.

Junior third baseman Dalika Wallace added five RBI on the day to finish with 11 RBI in the three-game sweep. Wallace batted .833 in the series with a .909 on-base percentage as she has now reached base in 18 straight games.

Sophomore designated player Olivia Daniel matched Wallace with three hits on the afternoon to extend her hit streak to seven games. Daniel drove in three runs. Sophomore Madison Webb pinch hit in both games and drove in a run each time. Classmate Jacobia Johnson reached base in seven of her eight plate appearances with two singles and five walks. Johnson ended up scoring five times.

NC Central (12-18 Overall) leveled its MEAC record to 3-3 while South Carolina State (0-27, 0-6) remained winless on the season. The Lady Eagles next visit Appalachian State University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.

GAME ONE: NC Central 3, South Carolina St. 0

Daniel drove in a pair of runs and Hurley notched her second straight complete-game victory to highlight game one victory for the Lady Eagles.

Hurley fanned six Lady Bulldogs and allowed just three hits over seven innings of work for her second shutout of the season. Hurley leveled her season record to 10-10 with her dominating performance.

Daniel put the maroon and gray on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Johnson led off the frame with a walk and she immediately stole second base before eventually tagging up from third to account for the opening run.

The Lady Eagles loaded up the bases to begin the third with three consecutive singles off the bats of sophomore Caroline Campbell, Johnson and sophomore Nadia Blevins. Daniel knocked in Campbell two batters later with the fourth hit of the frame down the right-field line.

Webb knocked in NCCU's final run with a hard single up the middle.

The Lady Eagles doubled-up South Carolina State, 6-3, in the hit column. Daniel was the only NCCU batter with more than one base knock.

GAME TWO: NC Central 12, South Carolina St. 0

Johnson drew a base on balls in all four of her trips to the plate and she eventually scored each time as NCCU tallied 12 runs in the nightcap.

Eosso allowed just three hits over five innings of work for her first complete-game shutout of the season. Eosso (2-5) recorded two strikeouts in the run-ruled shortened victory. She helped out her own cause with a single, a double and a walk.

Wallace had three hits and a walk in her four trips to the dish with five RBI. Wallace knocked in the first run of the game with a single in the first. After drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second, Wallace belted an RBI-triple to right in the fourth. Wallace capped her perfect performance with a two-run single in the fifth.
