Thanos Spyropoulos won in both singles and doubles play to pace the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team to a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division victory over rival and host North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Sebastian Bromley clinched the maroon and gray victory to keep the Eagles undefeated in league play. NCCU (4-9 Overall, 3-0 MEAC) clinched its third straight trip to the conference tournament with the triumph.
The Eagles won doubles for a third time this season – all team wins – with victories on courts two and three. Juez Torres partnered with freshman Amit Baron for a 6-4 win. The Aggies leveled doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 1, but Spyropoulos teamed up with fellow freshman
Christos Dagklis for a narrow 7-6 win to finish off doubles in favor of the visitors. Spyropoulos/Dagklis won the decisive tiebreaker 7-5.
Juez Torres/Baron improved to 3-4 on the season together and Spyropoulos/Dagklis moved to 4-7 as a rookie tandem.
Spyropoulos (5-7) doubled-up NCCU's advantage by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 conquest of junior No. 4 Hayden Faulkenbury.
North Carolina A&T (1-17, 0-4) rallied with straight-set wins at the second and third positions of the Aggies lineup before NCCU won the final three matches.
Senior
Gabriel Cucalon continued his stellar play atop the maroon and gray lineup with a 6-3, 6-3 win over senior Nicolas Arduh. Cucalon (9-3) has won nine straight matches.
Bromley finished off the team victory by tallying a 7-5, 6-4 victory over junior No. 5 Jordan Lawrence. Bromley (3-6) has won three of his last six matches.
Juez Torres put the exclamation point on the victorious day for the Eagles by winning the only three-set affair. Juez Torres (4-7) outlasted freshman Nolan Martino 7-6 (1), 3-6, 10-7 with the superset victory in the third.
NC Central next hosts the University of Notre Dame on Thursday at 2 p.m.
