TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Junior third baseman
Dalika Wallace provided the North Carolina Central University softball team with an early lead after hitting a solo home run, but host Florida A&M University kept the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard from that point and rallied to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) three-game series finale 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.
NCCU (9-18 Overall, 0-3 MEAC) left seven runners on base, including five stranded in scoring position as the Lady Eagles outhit the Rattlers 9-8.
Florida A&M (11-21, 3-0) – the preseason favorites to win the MEAC Southern Division – used back-to-back, two-out RBI-singles in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good and a four-hit fifth inning resulted in the other four runs for the victors. Senior Alexis Day capped the Rattlers scoring with a two-run, inside-the-park home run belted down the right field line.
The maroon and gray had nine of the first 11 hits on the day, putting runners in scoring position each of the first five innings. Senior
Aleyah Evans and sophomore
Olivia Daniel both tallied two hits.
Wallace crushed her fourth homer of the season over the left field fence with two outs in the first. The reigning MEAC Player of the Week has now reached in base in 15 straight games. Wallace was also hit by a pitch and stole second in the third inning.
Day tied the score in the score with a single in the first and she came around to score the go-ahead run later in the frame. Day finished with three RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman southpaw Brandice Boatwright (4-4) picked up her second straight win by allowing just one run despite giving up nine hits in the complete game. Sophomore
Kiara Hurley (8-10) recorded the contests' five strikeouts in her five inning of work for the Lady Eagles.
NC Central will next host South Carolina State University in a three-game MEAC series on Saturday-Sunday, March 30-31 at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, North Carolina.
