Eagles Unable to Overcome Early Woes to Penn State

BERKELEY, Calif. — Junior guard Kieche White poured in 18 points for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team in a 92-68 loss to Pennsylvania State University in the consolation game of the Cal Classic at Haas Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

White made half of her field goal attempts and all five of her free throw tries to account for her 18 points. She also led the Eagles with three assists.

Penn State (4-4 Overall) had a pair of players with career-high point totals in the victory. Junior Kamaria McDaniel topped all players with 27 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 precision from the free throw line. Classmate Alisia Smith followed closely with 22 points.

NCCU was held to 26.7-percent shooting in the first quarter while Penn State shot 53.8-percent in the period to jump out to an 18-10 advantage. The Eagles were still within single digits after 10 minutes of play as the Lady Lions committed twice as many turnovers (8-4) in the period.

PSU stretched its lead to 31-15 after completing two consecutive and-one plays. NC Central cut that deficit to single digits one last time after scoring the next seven points. Freshman Khadija Demry swished two consecutive shots before classmate Madalyn Anderson connected on her second 3-pointer of the period to make the score 31-22. However, the Lady Lions scored 12 unanswered points from that point, including half of them by their leading scorer on the season in McDaniel.

Penn State maintained a comfortable double-digit cushion from that point with leads of 46-26 at halftime and 67-51 after three quarters before winning by 24 points.

NCCU did outscored the Lady Lions, 25-21, in the third quarter with White scoring 10 of her 18 points in that timeframe and freshman Simone Edmundson scoring all five of her points in NCCU's lone winning quarter.

Anderson finished the contest making four shots from behind the arc to finish with a season-high 12 points. Senior Paulina Afriyie also reached double digits for the maroon and gray with 10 points. Afriyie, who came up with three steals, also flirted with a double-double with a game-high eight rebounds. Demry and sophomore Jasmine Pollock both chipped in six points.

PSU made over half of its shot attempts on the day (32-59, 54.2%) and controlled the backboards with a 42-25 rebounding advantage.

The Eagles entered the contest only shooting 59-percent from the free throw line on the season, but saw improvement against the Lady Lions by cashing in on their first 14 tries from the charity stripe. NCCU finished the game making 14 of 16 for 87.5-percent.

NC Central (1-5) will conclude its play in the Golden State at CSU Bakersfield on Monday at 10 p.m. EST (7 p.m. PST).
