Eagles Rally Past Camels for First Win

DURHAM, N.C. — Trailing by eight points early in the fourth quarter, North Carolina Central University went on a 15-0 run to electrify a big group of kids attending the game on Education Day and rally the Eagles to their first win of the season with a 67-64 victory over visiting Campbell University Tuesday.

The Camels made their 10th 3-pointer of the contest at the 9:27 mark of the fourth quarter to secure their largest lead of the game, 54-46. It would be Campbell's final made trey and the visitors last converted basket for the next six and a half minutes.

NCCU's ensuing comeback started with a pair of layups by senior Paulina Afriyie sandwiched around a jumper by sophomore Jasmine Pollock, who then hit a 3-pointer at the 7:14 mark to put the Eagles ahead for good at 55-54.

Sophomore Dasmine Kasey dished out three assists on those four made shots to start the decisive run. Kasey finished with six assists.

Junior Kieche White, who scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, added a three-point play to keep the run going and Afriyie's third layup during NCCU's 15 unanswered-point stretch capped the run with under three minutes left in the contest.

Campbell was able to pull within one point twice in the final 90 seconds, but White answered both times with a driving layup on the left side and then a 12-foot pull-up jumper.

NC Central (1-2 Overall) picked up its first win over the Camels since Dec. 9, 1979. Campbell (2-2) had won 10 straight going into Tuesday's game, including all nine previous meetings in the Eagles' NCAA Division I era (since 2007-08).

White reached the 20-plus point plateau for a second straight game, making half of her field goal attempts (7-14). Afriyie finished with 14 points and Pollock netted eight points. Freshman Anissa Rivera flirted with her second straight double-double, finishing with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Kiyana Brown also helped NCCU win the battle of the boards, 39-36, with eight rebounds.

The Camels had a trio of double-digit scorers. Sophomore ShyAnne Tuelle paced that group with 14 points and she finished off a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Tuelle made four of Campbell's 10 made 3-pointers with sophomore Luana Serranho generally finding the open shooter for the visitors with nine assists.

The Eagles shot 42-percent from the floor for a second straight game and they committed a season-low 11 turnovers. Campbell shot 37-percent and committed 15 mistakes.

NCCU held a nine-point edge in the second quarter, but the Camels closed the half on a 19-10 run to take a one-point lead of 33-32 at the midway point.

NC Central will next host High Point University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
