DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University women's basketball senior guard Rodneysha Martin has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for December 2018 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
 
Martin averaged 18.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game in her first five games of the season in December. She shot a precise 43.5-percent from the field and 81.1-percent from the free-throw line.
 
After missing the first seven games of the season due to injury, Martin jumped into the lineup and was NCCU's leading scorer in wins against UNCG and Wofford College. Martin scored a career-high 27 points in a 66-57 win over the Spartans and added 21 points and eight rebounds in a 66-59 victory over the Terriers.
 
Martin also scored 14 points against Kennesaw State University and 25 points at University of Memphis.
 
The resident of Olive Branch, Mississippi, is the Eagles top scorer for a second straight season. Martin, who is a Preseason All-MEAC selection, has scored in 10 of her first 13 games this season for an average of 15.2 points per game.
 
Martin has played in 96 career games at NCCU so far, including 57 starts, and was named to the All-MEAC Third Team in 2018.
 
The biology major boasts a 3.76 cumulative grade point average (GPA) midway through her senior season. Martin is a two-time MEAC All-Academic Team honoree, a 2018 NCCU Debra Saunders-White Leadership Award and 2018 NCCU Eagles Excellence Academic Award recipient. She participates in the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and NCCU Science African American Majors Evolving (SAAME). She plans to attend medical school after NCCU to eventually practice as an OB-GYN.
 
Martin was named NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month once before for November 2017, becoming the first player to earn that distinction twice since Morgan Jones (Jan. 2016, Jan. 2017).
