WBK GAME NOTES NO. 13: Wilberforce at NC Central


DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will conclude non-conference play to start the New Year when the Eagles host Wilberforce University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
 
The non-conference game will be broadcast for free on the NCCU Sports Network with Carter Woodiel providing the play-by-play. NCCU (2-10) will try and extend its home win streak to three straight games in its final tune-up before Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play begins on Saturday. The Eagles lost their last three games in a couple long road trips over the holidays, including a 77-56 setback at University of Memphis on Saturday. Senior guard Rodneysha Martin continues her strong play after returning from injury. Martin scored 25 points against the Tigers to increase her season average to 18.8 points per game in five games. Martin is shooting 43.5-percent from the field and 81.1-percent from the free throw line. Junior forward Paulina Afriyie has three double-doubles and is averaging 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Afriyie ranks in highly in the MEAC in points (12th), rebounds (3rd), field-goal percentage (6th, 47%), free throw percentage (13th, 61.4%) and blocks (5th, 1.4). Freshman Ashlyn Lockard is coming off a season-best 10-point performance. Classmate Kiyana Brown continues to be a defensive force, ranking second in blocks (2.4) and eighth in rebounds (6.7). Another freshman in Dasmine Kasey is the top 3-point point shooter in the league, making 44.8-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc.
 
Wilberforce (5-8) is an independent NAIA institution out of Ohio. The Bulldogs are playing this game as an exhibition, but the result will count on NCCU's record. Sophomore Nia McCormick (11.5) and senior Mustafa Notter (10.3) both are averaging double-digit points for Wilberforce. Notter also tops the Bulldogs with 8.2 rebounds per game.
