DURHAM, N.C. — Junior
Gabriel Cucalon and sophomores
Theofanis Kontopoulos and
Maksym Konovalov all won their singles matches for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team in a 4-3 home loss to the University of Delaware Thursday.
Freshman Guilherme Valdoleiros rallied past sophomore
Pablo Juez Torres in the final match of the day to secure the team victory for the Blue Hens.
Delaware (12-5) needed a tiebreaker win to squeak out what proved to be a very important first team point in the final doubles match. The Eagles then flew ahead 3-1 with the wins by Cucalon, Kontopoulos and Konovalov before Delaware fought back by winning the final three tilts to escape by the narrowest of margins.
After splitting the first two doubles matches, senior Colin Wong and junior Blaise Casselbury picked up the decisive win over Kontopoulos and Konovalov. Wong and Casselbury won a 7-5 tiebreaker to level their record together at 7-7 with the 7-6 triumph.
The visitors got their first doubles win on court three with a 6-2 victory by sophomore Laurenz Lankes and freshman Nathan Benyowitz.
Cucalon and junior
Sebastian Bromley leveled doubles for the Eagles with a 6-1 conquest in the middle match.
After six five straight losses to start the season, Cucalon and Bromley have now rattled off six straight wins to move over .500 paired together at 6-5.
Kontopoulos (6-1, 6-0) and Cucalon (6-0, 6-1) won atop NCCU's singles lineup as they each only lost one game. Konovalov used matching set scores of 6-4 to secure his win from the fourth position in the order.
Kontopoulos (8-5) and Cucalon (7-6) are both over .500 on the season while Konovalov notched his second win.
Wins by Wong (7-5, 6-1) and freshman Justice Jones (6-2, 6-2) leveled the match for the Blue Hens.
Valdoleiros lost his first set and trailed 5-4 in the second set before rallying on Juez Torres to improve to 8-2. Valdoleiros eventually won 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
