DURHAM, N.C. — Junior forward Paulina Afriyie scored 20 points and freshman forward Kiyana Brown made a game-high seven blocks for host North Carolina Central University in an 89-66 non-conference loss to Coastal Carolina University Saturday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Junior guard DJ Williams filled up the box score for the victorious Chanticleers with 23 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, six assists and one block.

Coastal Carolina held a one or two possession lead for most of a mistake-filled first half. NCCU scored the first four points of the game on two free throws and a layup by Afriyie. The Eagles continued to lead 7-4 before the Chants scored the next six points to catapult head for the rest of the contest. A pull-up jumper by Williams at the 5:03 mark of the second quarter gave CCU its largest lead of the half at 33-25 and the Chanticleers remained ahead by seven, 43-36, at halftime after sophomore Alise Davis converted on a 3-point play in the final seconds.

Both teams committed 19 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Williams led all players at the midway break with 13 points. Pollock and Afriyie went into the locker room having already scored in double-digits at 12 and 10 points, respectively.

A baseline jumper by Afriyie with 4:52 left in the third quarter pulled NCCU within two points at 51-49. However, Coastal Carolina scored the next 12 points to take control. The surge featured eight transition points for the Chants. Kasey ended NCCU's drought with a layup with 1:02 left, but the Eagles still trailed 65-53 heading into the fourth quarter.

Coastal Carolina maintained a double-digit cushion for most of the fourth quarter before winning by 23 points.

NC Central will continue its homestand after final exams when the Eagles host UNCG on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
