NCCU (0-5) is coming off a close 89-82 home loss to UNCW on Tuesday. The Eagles shot over 50-percent in that contest for the first time this season. They also held a 33-28 rebounding advantage. NCCU has only been outrebounded in one game this season so far, which may come in helpful against an Upstate squad that is being outrebounded by an average of 16 boards per contest. Junior
Paulina Afriyie leads the maroon and gray with 9.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Classmates
Shontai Totten and
Lanay Rodney follow with 8.5 and 7.8 points per game, respectively. Rodney is coming off a 17-point performance and she has been NCCU's top scorer in three games. Freshman
Kiyana Brown, who is scoring five points per game, is contributing big numbers on defense with 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest.
USC Upstate (1-4) suffered a 78-67 road loss to Furman University on Saturday. Junior transfer Brianna Lewis is making a big impact in her first season with the Spartans, averaging 21.6 points and 6.0 assists per game. Senior DeNisha Swain is Upstate's other double-digit scorer with 11.2 points per game. The Spartans defeated NCCU, 66-61, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, last season, but they are without their top three scorers from that contest.
