No. 13 Iowa Defeats NC Central


IOWA CITY, Iowa. — Nine different Eagles scored against nationally-ranked University of Iowa, but the Hawkeyes shot 62-percent from the field as nationally-ranked University of Iowa rolled to the 106-39 non-conference women's basketball victory over visiting North Carolina Central University Saturday night.
 
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Year senior Megan Gustafson posted a double-double with game-high totals of 20 points and 10 rebounds for the victors.
 
Iowa – ranked 13th by the Associated Press – remained undefeated on the season at 3-0.
 
Junior Lanay Rodney led the Eagles with seven points. Junior Paulina Afriyie and sophomore Zaria Atkins followed just behind with six points apiece.
 
NCCU was outrebounded for the first time this season as the Hawkeyes dominated the glass, 57-17. Afriyie and freshman Kiyana Brown led the Eagles as they each pulled down four boards.
 
Freshman Dasmine Kasey, who chipped in four points, also had two assists and a game-high three steals.
 
Iowa scored the first six points and never trailed. NCCU kept things interesting through the first quarter, 17-10, with Akins and Afriyie each scoring four points in the first 10 minutes. However, the Hawkeyes outscored the maroon and gray 30-8 and 29-6 in the middle two quarters to coast to the final buzzer.
 
A total of four Hawkeyes scored in double figures for a squad averaging 100 points per contest through their first three tilts. Junior Makenzie Meyer followed Gustafson with 16 points. Senior Hannah Stewart and freshman Monika Czinano both netted 15 points. That trio filled up the box score as Meyer dished out eight assists; Stewart corralled seven rebounds and made six assists; and Czinano yanked down seven rebounds.
 
The Eagles were held to a season-low 27-percent shooting from the floor.
 
NC Central (0-4) next hosts UNCW on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
