DURHAM, N.C. – Eight individuals have been selected for induction into the Alex M. Rivera NCCU Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 14, North Carolina Central University announced on Thursday (July 6).
The eight individuals are Rena Armwood (volleyball, 1996-99/softball, 1998-99, 2005-06), member of four conference championship teams in two sports and 1999 CIAA Volleyball Tournament MVP; Cheryl Bogues Munn (softball/basketball, 1989-93), NCAA Division II single-season softball record holder in stolen bases and NCCU basketball record holder in single-game steals; Anthony Cooley (football, 1988-91), three-time All-CIAA First Team honoree and one of only two Eagles in school history with a 1,000-yard receiving season; William Frizzell (football, 1980-83), First-Team All-CIAA defensive back with 10 career interceptions and NFL draft pick with 10 seasons as a professional athlete; Cassie King (basketball, 2003-07), all-time leading scorer in NCCU women's basketball history and 2007 CIAA Tournament MVP; Robert Lawson (meritorious service - posthumously), longtime NCCU photographer who started taking pictures of NCCU athletics in 1962 and received NCCU Athletics Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014; Hakeem Mohammed (track & field, 2003-07), seven-time NCAA Division II All-American and 2007 national champion in the 400-meter dash; and Davita Watson Morant (volleyball, 1996-99), record-breaker in NCCU career kills, blocks and service aces and 1998 CIAA Volleyball Player of the Year.
The 2017 induction ceremony will take place the morning of Oct. 14, prior to the NCCU home football contest against Gardner-Webb University. Details will be announced at a later date.

Rena Armwood
Athlete - Volleyball (1996-99) / Softball (1998-99, 2005-06)
Played on 4 conference championship teams in 2 sports. Volleyball (1996-99): 2-time All-CIAA First Team (1998, 1999); 3-time CIAA All-Tournament Team (1997, 1998, 1999); 1999 CIAA Tournament MVP when NCCU won its first volleyball conference championship; first student-athlete in NCCU history to record more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career (1,031 kills, 1,126 digs); broke school record in career digs with 1,126. Softball (1998-99, 2005-06): Played on 3 CIAA championship teams (1998, 1999, 2006); 1999 All-CIAA First Team; among top 10 career leaders in batting average (.432) and home runs (16); among top 10 single-season leaders in batting average (.533) and slugging percentage (.908) in 1999.
Cheryl Bogues Munn
Athlete - Softball/Basketball (1989-93)
Softball (1990-93): All-CIAA First Team, 1993; led nation in stolen bases during 3 of her 4 softball seasons; as a rookie in 1990, swiped 44 bases in 45 attempts (1.52 stolen bases per game); in 1992, stole 85 bases in 87 tries (2.93 stolen bases per game), which remains an NCAA Division II single-season record; in 1993, stole 65 bases (2.41 per game) without getting caught, which also stands as Division II record for best perfect season; also led nation in runs batted in per game (1.52) and runs scored per game (1.90) as a junior in 1992; completed NCCU softball career with 219 stolen bases and a success rate of 98.2 percent, which ranks second among NCAA Division II career leaders. Basketball (1989-93): topped Lady Eagles in steals for 3 consecutive seasons (1990-93) and assists for back-to-back seasons (1991-93); among NCCU's all-time leaders with 270 career steals and 290 career assists; also holds school record for steals in a game with 16 vs. Bowie State, Jan. 25, 1990.
Anthony Cooley
Athlete - Football (1988-91)
3-time First-Team All-CIAA; ranks 2nd at NCCU in career receiving yards (2,879) and 7th in career receptions (130); one of only two players in school history with a 1,000-yard receiving season (1990 - 1,058 yards); played professionally with Toronto Argonauts (1992-93) and Shreveport Pirates (1994).
William Frizzell
Athlete - Football (1980-83)
All-CIAA First Team defensive back in 1983; team captain, 1983; 10 career interceptions ranks 15th at NCCU; selected in 10th round of 1984 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions; played 10 NFL seasons with Lions (1984-85), Eagles (1986-90, 1992-93), and Bucs (1991).
Cassie King
Athlete - Basketball (2003-07)
All-time leading scorer in NCCU women's basketball history with 2,150 career points, and school's second-leading rebounder with 1,076 rebounds; ended career as fourth-leading scorer (2,150 points/18.1 ppg) and seventh-leading rebounder (1,076 rebounds/9.0 rpg) in CIAA history; became only second player in CIAA history and 15th player in NCAA Division II women's basketball history to amass more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds; 3-time All-Conference, All-State, All-Region and All-America Honorable Mention (2005-07); 4-time CIAA All-Tournament Team selection (2004-07); scored school and conference tournament record 59 points versus Bowie State on March 1, 2005; voted 2007 CIAA Tournament MVP, leading team to first conference championship title in 23 years and second straight NCAA playoff appearance.
Robert Lawson
Meritorious Service (posthumously)
NCCU photographer; started taking pictures of NCCU athletics in 1962; mentored by Alex Rivera; volunteer for 30 years, hired by NCCU PR Office in 1992; went above-and-beyond job responsibilities in capturing images on student-athletes in action, both at home and on the road at his own expense; retired from NCCU in 2012; presented with NCCU Athletics Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2014.
Hakeem Mohammed
Athlete - Track (2003-07)
9-time NCAA Division II All-American; 2007 NCAA Division II National Champion in 400-meter dash, posted fastest time at the NCAA Championships since 1998 (45.37 seconds); 2-time CIAA Champion (2004 100m, 2007 400m); 6-time individual All-CIAA.
Davita Watson Morant
Athlete - Volleyball (1996-99)
1998 CIAA Volleyball Player of the Year, 3-time All-CIAA First Team (1997, 1998, 1999); 2-time CIAA All-Tournament Team (1997, 1999); ended career as NCCU career leader in kills (1,271), total blocks (399) and service aces (151); broke school record for single-season kills with 368 in 1998, then broke it again with 441 in 1999; broke school single-season record with 110 total blocks in 1998; helped lead team to first volleyball conference championship in NCCU history (1999); also lettered in basketball (1996-97), scoring 30 points vs. Winston-Salem State on Jan. 11, 1997.
