NCCU Tops Morgan State, 2-1, to Advance in MEAC Tournament

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Senior pitcher Dominique Wilson only allowed one run in her complete-game performance and she drove in both runs for the Lady Eagles as North Carolina Central University edged Morgan State University, 2-1, in an elimination game during the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Thursday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The fourth-seeded Lady Eagles will play another elimination game on Friday at 10 a.m. against the loser of the Florida A&M University and North Carolina A&T State University game that will be contested Thursday night.

NCCU secured its first MEAC tourney win in program history and the Lady Eagles improved to 13-29 overall. The third-seeded Bears finished their season with a .500 record at 23-23.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Wilson ripped a double that scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs. Her deep shot down the right-field line that landed only about five-feet fair plated freshman catcher Dalika Wallace and junior outfielder Danyelle Noland.

Wilson's game-winning hit came against 2017 MEAC Pitcher of the Year Amy Begg.

Wallace started the decisive frame with a single to left and Noland drew an ensuing walk.

Begg (20-14), who entered postseason play with 20 wins, was tagged with her second loss of the day.

Wilson (9-16) was equally impressive from the pitcher's circle as the plate. She fanned six Bears over her seven innings of work while holding MSU to just two hits and two walks.

A leadoff walk in the top of the third by Danielle Pitpit led to the only run for the Bears. She eventually scored on a single by Kate Vosper.

NCCU doubled up Morgan State, 4-2, in the hit column. Freshman Ava Dolan and senior Jennifer Allison had leadoff singles in the second and fourth, respectively, but both runners were stranded.
