Wildcats Complete Series Sweep of NCCU

CARY, N.C. – The highest scoring team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) had its bats on showcase Sunday morning as the Bethune-Cookman University softball team belted 16 hits en route to a 10-2 victory in five innings over host North Carolina Central University.

All nine batters in the Wildcats lineup hit safely as Bethune-Cookman completed the three-game Southern Division series sweep of the Lady Eagles. BCU improved its record to 16-26 overall and 7-2 in the league while NCCU stumbled to 8-25 and 3-6.

The visitors scored all 10 of their runs before the maroon and gray got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Dominique Wilson started the rally with a one-out double, which was her fifth hit of the series. Pinch runner Zakiya Smith then scored NCCU's first run on a single by freshman Ava Dolan. A sac bunt by sophomore Aleyah Evans later knocked in Dolan for the final Eagle run.

Freshman phenom Ryan Jackson, who leads the MEAC in batting average, RBI and home runs as a rookie, added to her impressive totals with a pair of home runs. Jackson's first blast in the top of the first started BCU's scoring while her leadoff shot in the third started a five-run frame. Jackson finished the morning going 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. She finished the series batting .459 on the season with totals of 39 RBI and 12 home runs in 38 games.

Other highlights for the Wildcats included sophomore Brianna Sanders collecting a team-high three hits. Sanders singled, stole second and scored in the third; ripped a two-run laser just over the center field fence in the third; and singled in the fourth. Junior Mariah Davis added two hits and two RBI, including a triple in the third. Freshman Taylor Sherritt also provided two hits.

Senior pitcher Sabrina Anguiano recorded her second win of the series. The 2015 MEAC Pitcher of the Year held NCCU to two runs (one earned) on three hits with no walks allowed over the first four innings. Anguiano improved to 9-7.

The Lady Eagles used all three of their pitchers with Wilson (7-13) taking the loss after giving up four runs on five hits over one-plus inning.

Dolan tallied two of NCCU's three hits as she went 2-for-2 with two singles, one RBI and one run.
