Highlanders Outrun Wilson’s Hot Bat to Sweep NCCU

RADFORD, Va. – Senior pitcher/designated player Dominique Wilson reached base safely in five of her six plate appearances, including a home run, for the visiting North Carolina Central University softball team in a 6-1 and 6-0 doubleheader loss at Radford University Tuesday evening.

Wilson went 4-for-5 with a home run, three singles and a walk. She totaled half of the Lady Eagles' eight hits for the twin bill.

However, Radford scored six runs on seven hits in both contests to complete the sweep and move back over .500 at 12-11

NCCU (3-17 Overall) returns home to host University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday with the doubleheader at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, North Carolina, starting at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE: Radford 6, N.C. Central 1

Wilson belted a solo home run to straightaway center field with one out in the seventh to break-up a shutout bid by Radford senior starter Abby Morrow.

Wilson's second home run of the season was just one of four NCCU hits off Morrow. Wilson also had the first visitor base knock with a single to right in the second inning.

Morrow (9-5) recorded six strikeouts on her way to her 10th complete game.

The Highlanders scored their six runs on a trio of two-run hits. Radford first got on the board on a deep double by junior catcher Maggie Rowe, who knocked in both base runners after the ball bounced high off the left field fence. Freshman Hunter Mundy and classmate Callie Morgan tacked on insurance runs with two-run singles in the fifth and sixth, respectively.

Rowe notched three of RU's eight hits.

Wilson (3-9) took the loss despite going the distance and tossing three consecutive 1-2-3 innings from the second thru the fourth. She fanned four highlanders.

Sophomore Miriam Duen and junior Danyelle Noland accounted for the other two maroon and gray hits.

GAME TWO: Radford 6, N.C. Central 0

Sophomore starter Kayla Huffman recorded 15 strikeouts – one shy of a Radford school record – on her way to her second consecutive shutout. Huffman, who blanked St. John's University on Sunday, only allowed four hits for her second straight scoreless performance.

The Lady Eagles best chance at scoring came in the seventh when Huffman issued three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. However, her 15th K wrapped around a pair of fielder's choice groundouts prevented NCCU from plating a run.

The Highlanders used the long ball to give Huffman plenty of run support, including solo shots off the bats by senior Kayla Bishton, freshman Hunter Mundy and senior Summer Robinson.

Wilson highlighted play for NCCU with a pair of singles and a walk. Duen added her second hit of the day and sophomore Aleyah Evans registered a single. Senior pitcher Jennifer Allison went all seven innings for the Lady Eagles and had two strikeouts.
