NCCU Posts Wire-to-Wire Win at Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Morgan Jones and sophomore Dominique Adams both supplied career-high point totals in leading the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to a 58-46 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road win at Coppin State University Monday evening.

Jones matched her career best mark with 25 points, including four made 3-pointers, and Adams was a flawless 12 of 12 from the free throw line on her way to a career-high 17 points.

The visiting Lady Eagles jumped out to a 20 point lead in the first half and then made eight consecutive free throws in the final 40 seconds, including six straight by Adams, to thwart a late rally by CSU.

NCCU (4-17 Overall, 3-6 MEAC) picked up its first road win of the season. Coppin State (5-17, 5-5) dipped to .500 both in the MEAC and at home (3-3).

Sophomore Rodneysha Martin made a 20-foot jumper from the right wing on NCCU's opening possession, sparking a 6-0 run to start the contest, as the visitors led from the onset.

Junior Kierona Morton scored NCCU's other four points in the opening run and her third hoop at the 1:19 mark put the Lady Eagles ahead by double digits, 12-2. NCCU maintained a double figure cushion from that point.

Junior Genesis Lucas netted Coppin State's only field goal of the first quarter and NCCU scored the final nine points to lead 15-2 after 10 minutes.

A trio of 3-pointers by Jones in 94 second span provided NCCU with another 9-0 run in the second quarter as the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 20 points, 32-22, at halftime.

Jones swished 13 points in the first half and senior Chantal Thomas directed NCCU's offense that shot 42.9-percent (12 of 28) in the first 20 minutes with seven assists (which matched a career-high mark).

CSU was held to an icy 15.4% (4 of 26) from the floor in the first half, but came out on fire to begin the third quarter. The host Eagles made six of their first seven shots (85.7%) to begin the second half on a 13-6 run and close the deficit to 13 at 38-25.

However, NCCU held Coppin State without a field goal for the final 4:40 of the third quarter after the media timeout. The Lady Eagles finished the period on a 9-4 rally to extend their edge back to 18 points at 47-29.

NCCU continued to maintain a sizable advantage at 50-31 before CSU rallied with its own 9-0 run to pull within 10 points with 2:25 left. Both team were held scoreless until Adams made a pair of free throws with just 40 seconds left. CSU pulled within 10 points three more times in the final minute but NCCU answered from the free throw each time.

The maroon and gray went a sizzling 23 of 24 (95.8%) from the free throw line, with Adams making her dozen attempts and Jones converting on nine of 10 tries.

Morton finished with six points; freshman Paulina Afriyie tallied four points and a team-high eight rebounds; Adams and sophomore Deja McCain each pulled down five rebounds; and Thomas made a game-high three steals to go along with her seven dimes.

NCCU returns home to host South Carolina State University on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
