PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Senior guard
Morgan Jones matched her career-high output with 25 points for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 73-51 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball loss at University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon in the Hytche Center.
Jones, who was named the Madness MEAC Player of the Week last week, scored nearly half of the Lady Eagles points on 9-of-20 (45%) precision from the field, including three 3-pointers, and a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line. Jones also had four rebounds, one block and one steal.
Maryland Eastern Shore (10-13 Overall, 4-8 MEAC) avenged a nine-point loss to the Lady Eagles in Durham last month with four players scoring in double figures and hold the visitors to just 22.9% shooting from the floor.
Junior Moengaroa Subritzky led the victorious Hawks with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Briana Mack scored a team-high 15 points, junior Alexus Hicks poured in 14 and senior Mariah McCoy chipped in 11 points.
NCCU (6-18, 5-7) had its season-high, three-game win streak snapped.
Sophomore forward
Deja McCain was the Lady Eagles' second leading scorer with eight points. No other NCCU player made more than one field goal.
Eastern Shore set the tone on its Homecoming early, scoring the game's first 14 points. The opening run featured a trio of 3-pointers, including back-to-back treys by Hicks.
Freshman
Erin Houser finally put the Lady Eagles on the board at the 3:31 mark of the first quarter with a 10-foot jumper in the paint. The Hawks led 19-7 after 10 minutes, holding NCCU to its worst shooting period at 20-percent (3 of 15) from the floor.
NCCU then showed some of its own defense by holding the hosts to just 17.6% (3 of 17) accuracy in the second quarter in outscoring MDES, 13-10. Sophomore
Jayla Calhoun converted on a putback attempt in the final second to have the Lady Eagles only trailing by single digits, 29-20, at halftime.
However, the Hawks soared away with a 19-4 start to the second half. Eastern Shore outscored the visitors, 27-11, in the third quarter to take a commanding 56-31 advantage into the final period before setting for the 22-point triumph.
MDES outrebounded the Lady Eagles, 51-42, while the league's best 3-point shooting team nailed eight shots from behind the arc.
NCCU returns to action at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Monday at 2 p.m.
