NCCU Softball Drops Double Dip at Elon

ELON, N.C. – North Carolina Central University held the initial lead in both games, but host Elon University rallied each time to sweep Saturday's non-conference softball doubleheader at the Hunt Softball Park by scores of 6-1 and 10-2.

Junior shortstop Ryann Kostandin had a pair of base hits in each contest to pace the Lady Eagles. Kostandin, who ripped three doubles, totaled four of NCCU's 12 hits.

NCCU (1-5) will next play a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb University on Thursday at Noon.

GAME ONE: Elon 6, N.C. Central 1

Senior starter Dominique Wilson held Elon scoreless for the first four innings, but the Phoenix put together six runs late to take the opener. Wilson (1-3) only allowed two runs over five innings of work in the losing effort. She scattered five hits and recorded two strikeouts without giving up a walk.

NCCU broke a scoreless tie with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Aleyah Evans led off with a single up the middle and eventually scored when senior Brianna Hampton picked up a painful RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Lady Eagles had several chances to score more runs and left nine runners on base.

The Phoenix took the lead with four hits in the home half of the fifth and then pulled away with a four-run sixth that featured two-run homers off the bats of senior Carey Million and sophomore Erica Serafini.

Freshman Kenna Quinn improved to 3-0 with the complete-game victory. Quinn totaled seven strikeouts and has yet to yield an earned run this season in four appearances.

GAME TWO: Elon 10, N.C. Central 2 (5 Innings)

The Phoenix scored in all four innings they batted to take the nightcap by the eight-run rule in five innings. Elon moved its record to 5-1 with the twin bill sweep.

A three-run homer by Million, her second of the day and third in six games, put the hosts ahead in the bottom the first. Serafini added a bases-clearing, three-run double in the fourth to conclude Elon's run production. All nine Phoenix starters reached base by either hit or walk.

NCCU jumped out to the 2-nil edge in the top of the first. Kostandin started the game with a double down the right line and scored on a one-out double down the other line by senior Kim Mobley. Wilson followed with a single to right that plated Mobley.

The Lady Eagles tallied seven hits and left seven more runners stranded on base. Kostandin and Mobley both tallied a pair of doubles.

Three of Elon's 10 runs were unearned due to two NCCU errors.
