Seahawks Soar Past Eagles


WILMINGTON, N.C. — Junior Rodneysha Martin scored a game-high 20 points and classmate Dominique Adams tallied a season-high 11 points to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team in an 89-63 loss at UNCW on Sunday afternoon.
 
Sophomore guard Timber Tate drilled a career-high six 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 20 points to lead the Seahawks to their most impressive win of the season. UNCW (5-3 Overall) is a perfect 5-0 at home in Trask Coliseum.
 
Martin led NCCU in the scoring department for a fourth time, depositing four 3-pointers on her way to 20 points. Adams cashed in her season-best 11 points with 4-of-7 accuracy from the field. They bot hadded three rebounds and two assists while Adams tacked on two steals.
 
Junior Caira Benton chipped in eight point and two blocks. Junior Deja McCain finished with six points and a team-high six boards.
 
Sophomore Paulina Afriyie won the opening tip with a long pass that led to a quick layup by Adams just three seconds into play. It would be NCCU's only lead.
 
Tate made her first two 3-pointers over the next minute to put the Seahawks ahead for good at 6-2.
 
NCCU was matching UNCW early and a jumper by Benton pulled the visitors to within one at 14-13. However, the Seahawks finished the period on a 10-0 run that featured a third trey by Tate.
 
UNCW made six of its first eight shots and shot 58.8-percent over the first 10 minutes to lead 24-13. The Eagles were held to just two made field goals in the second quarter while four different Seahawks made three-pointers in the period to extend the home advantage to 25 points, 44-19, at halftime.
 
The sizzling Seahawks scorched the net at 61.5% precision in the third quarter to maintain a comfortable lead of 68-42 heading into the final frame. UNCW finished the contest at 58.6% accuracy in the game to win by 26 points.
 
Four Seahawks scored in double digits. Tate made six of UNCW's 10 three-pointers to pace the pack. Senior Madison Raque followed with 15 points, classmate Jenny DeGraaf bucketed 11 and sophomore Lacey Suggs totaled 10. Senior Rebekah Banks pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as the hosts controlled the backboards, 37-28. Raque dished out seven assists and sophomore Moriah Crisp handed out six assists.
 
NCCU continues its six-game road swing with a trip to Conway, South Carolina, to play Coastal Carolina University on Friday at 6 p.m.
