DURHAM, N.C. — Sophomore
Paulina Afriyie notched her third straight double-double and freshman
Kieche White scored a season-high 13 points for host North Carolina Central University in a 58-51 loss to Campbell University Thursday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
The Camels started the fourth quarter with a decisive 16-0 run to go up 22 points before the Eagles made a valiant comeback attempt by ending the contest on a 15-0 rally.
Campbell (7-3 Overall) entered the contest ranked fifth in NCAA Division I in points allowed per game. The Camels defense was stingy once again, holding NCCU (2-10) to just 25.4% shooting from the floor and right on its average of 51 points allowed.
Afriyie matched her season-high point total with 16 points. She pulled down a career-high 15 points to complete her third double-double. Afriyie added two blocks, one assist and one steal to compliment her big performance.
White made three 3-pointer on her way to 13 points and delivered four assists to pace NCCU's reserves.
The Camels got a pair of double-doubles from senior Summer Price and freshman Lauren McNamara-Clement. Price hit a trio of treys on her way to a game-high 21 points while McNamara-Clement totaled 13 points. They each grabbed 12 rebounds.
Freshman Tatyana Carver swished four 3-pointers to provide Campbell a third double-digit scorer with 14 points. Senior McKala Rouse distributed nine assists.
Junior
Sami Oliver-Alexander drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter, which pulled NCCU within six points at 42-36. However, the Eagles missed their next 14 shots to start the final frame and was held scoreless for six minute and 36 second stretch.
Rouse found an open Camel for three-pointer on three consecutive possessions to begin Campbell's 16-0 run, including a pair by successful launches by Price.
Afriyie ended the drought with a layup at the 3:24 mark to ignite NCCU's improbable comeback try. The Eagles late rally included buckets from beyond the arc by Oliver-Alexander, White and sophomore
Jada Blow before running out of time.
Junior
Rodneysha Martin made a jumper and two free throws to give NCCU an early 6-4 edge. Campbell then held the Eagles scoreless for the final 7:33 of the first quarter to climb ahead 14-6. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter and the visitors maintained a 27-20 advantage at halftime.
Oliver-Alexander scored all nine of her points from long range and Martin totaled seven points. Junior
