N.C. Central Women's Basketball
The Lady Eagles lost their eighth straight game with a 60-40 road setback at Furman University on Friday. NCCU (1-10 Overall) is 1-4 at home.
Senior
Morgan Jones once again led NCCU is scoring against the Paladins with 13 points. Jones has scored in double figures in seven games and has been the Lady Eagles' top scorer five times. The Stockbridge, Georgia, product is averaging a team-best 10.3 points per game, including 1.5 made 3-pointers per contest.
Other highlights for NCCU included freshman
Erin Houser grabbing a season-high six rebounds and junior
Kierona Morton pulling down seven rebounds and making a season-high four blocks.
A trio of guards follow Jones in scoring and they are all within 1.5 points of each other in freshman
Jada Blow (7.2 ppg), sophomore
Dominique Adams (6.5 ppg) and sophomore
Rodneysha Martin (5.8). Blow paces the Lady Eagles with 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Sophomore
Deja McCain chips in 5.8 points per game and grabs a team-high 4.8 rebounds per game. Houser provides 5.5 points per game while Adams and Morton 4.7 and 4.3 rebounds per contest, respectively.
NCCU suffered a 68-46 defeat at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina, last season. Martin had a team-high nine points in that tilt while Calhoun and senior Monique-Whaley Briggs each bucketed eight points.
USC Upstate Women's Basketball
The Spartans returned from the holiday break with a 76-63 home win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. USC Upstate (6-8 Overall) is 2-4 on the road.
Senior guard Raven Jefferson is USC Upstate's top scorer with 12.6 points per game, including 1.6 made 3-pointers per game, while also packing the Spartans with 2.1 steals per game.
USCU's next five scorers all average within one point of each other with sophomore Vanessa Agrusa leading the pack with 7.9 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. Junior Brittney Delva (7.8 ppg) leads Upstate with 2.4 assists per game; sophomore Tamara Thorpe (7.6 ppg) is the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 27 points against the Eastern Shore Hawks; freshman center Riley Popplewell (7.5 ppg) has started all 14 games with Jefferson; and sophomore DeNisha Swain (6.9 ppg) hands out 2.2 assists and makes 1.4 steals per game.
Upstate's top two scorers in last season's 22-point win against the Lady Eagles are no longer on the team. However, Jefferson did score 11 points in that triumph. The Spartans are 3-2 all-time against NCCU.
