DURHAM, N.C. – Seniors
London Booker and
Jenny Tracy both hit home runs to help construct a seven-run lead for host North Carolina Central University but Savannah State University was able to rally for a 15-11 win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series finale Tuesday afternoon with the help of eight unearned runs in the sixth inning.
The Lady Tigers pounded out 18 hits to complete the three-game series sweep. Savannah State moved within one game of .500 at 17-18 overall and remained undefeated in the league at 6-0.
SSU held an early 3-nil advantage before the Lady Eagles soared ahead, 10-3, with 10 unanswered runs, including four in the second and three in both the third and fourth.
Booker catapulted NCCU ahead, 4-3, with a three-run blast over the right-field fence in the second. The homer was the first for Booker, who has limited at bats in her four-year career for the Maroon and Gray as a pitcher.
Tracy led off the third with her team-high fourth home run, a solo shot to straightaway center. The inning also featured an RBI single off the bat of junior
Brianna Hampton.
In the fourth, senior
Kayleigh Brueck capped NCCU's scoring with a two-run single. Senior
Casey Hargett scored twice during the Lady Eagles surge.
NCCU committed a pair of errors in the infield in the sixth inning allowing the Lady Tigers to roar back in front with eight unearned runs. Savannah State collected seven of its 18 hits in the frame, several of which were bloopers just out of reach of the defense.
The visitors kept the momentum and scored four more runs in the seventh, which proved important as the Lady Eagles were able to score one more in their final at bat.
Tracy continued her strong play with three of NCCU's 13 hits to finish with seven base knocks in the series. Booker, Brueck and freshman
Aleyah Evans all finished with a pair of hits. Evans scored the Lady Eagles final run on an RBI-groundout by sophomore
Danyelle Noland.
Booker was tagged with the loss in the pitcher's circle despite all eight of her runs allowed in 3 2/3 innings of relief work being unearned.
NCCU (3-31, 0-6) continues MEAC play with a three-game weekend series at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10.
