Final Inning Critical in NCCU Softball Split at SCSU

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Both games of a doubleheader split between MEAC southern division foes North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University came down to the final inning.

In game one, NCCU scored two runs in the seventh inning for a 4-3 win, the Lady Eagles first conference victory of the season.

In the nightcap, S.C. State rallied from a six-run deficit, including three runs in the last frame, to edge the visitors 7-6.

Dominique Wilson went 4-for-7 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored to top NCCU in the doubleheader. Kayleigh Brueck had three hits with two doubles two RBI and two runs scored, London Booker tallied three hits and a team-best three RBI, and Casey Hargett contributed three singles and a run scored for the Lady Eagles on Saturday.

NCCU is now 5-39 overall with a 1-10 record in conference play, while SCSU is 5-23 overall and 2-9 in the MEAC. The weekend finale is Sunday at 12 noon.

GAME ONE: NCCU 4, SCSU 3

The Lady Eagles trailed 2-0 after four innings, but used an RBI double by Brueck in the fifth and an RBI single by Wilson, her third hit of the contest, in the sixth to even the score.

In the seventh inning, NCCU pulled ahead courtesy of a one-out single to right field by Markell Wylie to drive in Brueck, who reached base on an infield error. With the bases loaded, Booker hit an infield single to score Wylie for a much-needed insurance run.

S.C. State got a two-out RBI single by Deanna Sullivan to narrow the deficit to one run in the bottom of the seventh, but she was left stranded at first base when the Lady Eagles celebrated the triumph.

Booker not only drove in the eventual game-winning run for NCCU, she also struck out six batters to earn the pitching victory.

GAME TWO: SCSU 7, NCCU 6

NCCU jumped out to a commanding 6-0 advantage in its first five at-bats, highlighted by two RBI singles by Booker, a two-RBI double by Brianna Hampton and an RBI single by Brueck.

S.C. State chipped away at the deficit with three unearned runs in the fifth inning and another unearned run in the sixth to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Lady Eagles heading into the last inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, NCCU walked four of the first five batters to allow a run to score. With one out and the bases loaded, Sullivan hit a double to center field to plate the tying and winning runs for the home team.

After not committing an error in Saturday's opener, NCCU had five errors in game two, resulting in four unearned runs.
