DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The North Carolina Central University softball team rallied to tie Sunday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball series finale with two runs in the fifth before host Bethune-Cookman University squeaked out the 3-2 win on a walk-off single by freshman shortstop Brianna Sanders.
Sophomore first baseman Iesha Waters scored the game-winning run for Bethune-Cookman. Waters led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Waters advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Melissa Berouty and then scored on the two-out single up the middle that just out of the reach of the diving shortstop by Sanders.
The Wildcats, who were celebrating Senior Day and are the preseason favorites to win the Southern Division, have won six straight MEAC games after completing the three-game series sweep of the Lady Eagles to improve to 11-24 overall and 6-3 in the league.
NCCU (3-34, 0-9) belted out nine hits, including three infield singles by sophomore
Danyelle Noland and two more hits on the dirt by senior
Markell Wylie.
The two teams traded a pair of unearned runs before the seventh as NCCU senior
London Booker and junior counterpart Sabrina Anguiano both tossed quality starts for their respective squads.
Anguiano (5-11) had five strikeouts and did not allow an earned run or walk in her second straight complete-game victory over the Lady Eagles. Booker (2-14) took the loss despite only allowing one earned run in her complete-game effort.
The Wildcats scratched out one run in each of the first two frames to take the early 2-nil advantage.
Freshman
Aleyah Evans, who had the Lady Eagles only extra-base hit when she roped a double down the left-field line to start the fifth, and Wylie scored NCCU's equalizer runs in the frame on a Bethune-Cookman throwing error.
NCCU next plays a non-conference doubleheader against MEAC Northern Division foe Norfolk State University on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
