PREVIEW: #NCCUWBB Entertains Johnson & Wales Friday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will try and defeat Johnson & Wales University for a second straight season when the Lady Eagles host the Wildcats in McDougald-McLendon Arena on Friday at 6 p.m.
 
NCCU will be providing pay-per-view video ($8.95) of the game along with free audio and live stats. NCCU Sports Network broadcaster Mike Wood will be on air with the play-by-play. The Lady Eagles are coming off a 66-50 road loss at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday. NCCU (0-2 Overall) was held to under 30-percent shooting for a second straight game.
 
Senior guard Morgan Jones had a big game against the Chanticleers in which she scored 18 points, including four made 3-pointers, and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. She is averaging 14 points and eight rebounds per game.
 
Freshman guard Jada Blow is second on the team with 9.0 points per game at leads NCCU with 2.5 assists per contest. Sophomores Dominique Adams and Deja McCain follow with 6.5 and 6.0 points per game, respectively. Adams leads the Lady Eagles with 36.5 minutes played per contest and McCain tops NCCU with 1.0 block per game. Junior Kierona Morton is second on the squad with 5.5 rebounds per contest and is followed by Adams (5.0), McCain (4.5) and Blow (4.5).
 
The maroon and gray have averaged 5.5 made 3-pointers per game and are actually shooting better from beyond the arc (33.3%) than from inside it (23.7%).
 
NCCU has started the season committing fewer turnovers than it did a year ago and making more steals. The Lady Eagles have 20 total steals thru their first two games with Blow, Jones, McCain, freshman Erin Houser, sophomore Rodneysha Martin and senior Chantal Thomas all averaging at least one theft per contest.
 
NCCU knocked off Johnson & Wales, 68-58, in the two program's first meeting last season in Charlotte. The Lady Eagles soared out to a 25-5 lead after the first quarter and then made 8 of 8 free throws in the final 75 seconds to hold off late Wildcats comeback attempt. McCain had a strong performance with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jones and Adams both tacked on 10 points, senior Monique Whaley-Briggs bucketed nine and Thomas cashed in eight.
 
Johnson & Wales Women's Basketball
 
The Wildcats are coming off 89-47 home win over Columbia International University on Wednesday. Johnson & Wales (4-2 Overall) is a member of the United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and is 0-1 on the road.
 
Junior forward Jaquana Pauling has been dominate for the Wildcats, averaging a double-double with 14.2 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. Pauling has four double-doubles on the season.
 
Junior guard Vanderia Shackleford and senior center Donyelle Stuetley have also averaged over 10 points per contest. Shackleford is swishing 12.3 points per game and leads the team with 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Stuetley is sinking 10.3 points per game and is making a team-high 0.8 blocks per contest.
 
Shackleford played all 40 minutes against NCCU last season in Charlotte and led the Wildcats with 19 points and three assists. Pauling chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
