DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will begin its road slate with a non-conference game at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NCCU will be providing a free audio webcast of the game with NCCU Sports Network broadcaster Mike Wood on the air with the play-by-play. N.C. Central Women's Basketball
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 50-47 season-opening home loss to Pfeiffer University on Friday. NCCU (0-1 Overall) held a lead going into the final minute before the Falcons scored the contests final seven points to lose by three. NCCU was held to 25-percent shooting from the field.
Freshman guard
Jada Blow made an impressive debut for the maroon and gray. She filled up the box score with 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Blow made a trio of three-pointers en route to her team-high, 15-point total.
NCCU's most impressive stat in its season opener was 12 team steals. The dozen thefts is a higher steal total than the Lady Eagles had in any game last year. Blow topped the list with four steals while senior guard
Morgan Jones, senior guard
Chantal Thomas and freshman forward
Erin Houser all came up with two steals.
Jones, who is NCCU's top returning scorer from last season at 10.4 points per game, maintained her average to start the new season by pouring in 10 points against Pfeiffer. Jones also tallied six rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore forward
Deja McCain, who played in all 28 games as a freshman last season, made her first collegiate start on Friday and chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
Other statistical leaders for the Lady Eagles include freshman forward
Paulina Afriyie with eight rebounds, Thomas with three assists and Houser with one block.
Sophomore guard
Dominique Adams played a team-high 33 minutes and netted four points and six rebounds.
NCCU is 0-3 against Coastal Carolina and last played the Chanticleers on Dec. 17, 2014 with CCU winning by 15, 67-52. Jones started in that contest and scored 10 points.
Coastal Carolina Women's Basketball
The Chanticleers suffered a 64-57 setback in its opener at Clemson University on Friday. Coastal Carolina (0-1) is coming off a 12-18 campaign in 2015-16 in which CCU posted a winning record of 8-6 at home.
Seven Chanticleers grabbed four or more rebounds against the Tigers as Coastal Carolina controlled the boards with a +6.0 rebounding advantage. Senior Rachael Gregory paced the Chanticleers on the glass with nine rebounds. Classmate Yasmine Miller followed closely with eight boards.
Gregory, who was averaging a team-high 11.3 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury last year, tallied 14 points to begin her final season.
Senior guard Ced Gibson is CCU's top returning scorer and playmaker, averaging 12.6 points and 3.8 assists per game Gibson garnered 2016 Second Team All-Big South acclaim last season and chipped in five points and four assists on Friday.
Junior guard Jas Adams matched Gregory with 14 points against Clemson. Adams, who was a Big South All-Freshman Team honoree in 2014, also had three steals in the opener.
Gibson led the Chanticleers to its last triumph over NCCU two seasons ago. She nearly posted a double-double with 15 points, nine assists and four steals against the Lady Eagles.
