WILSON LIFTS NCCU PAST THE AGGIES, 2-1

NCCU can advance to the MEAC Tournament with two wins Sunday

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Dominique Wilson tossed a seven-strikeout complete game without allowing an earned run and she hit a go-ahead home run in fourth to lead North Carolina Central University to a 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference  (MEAC) softball victory over rival North Carolina A&T University Saturday afternoon at Parkwood Athletic Field.

The Lady Eagles kept their playoff chances alive with the series opening win. NCCU (17-26 Overall, 3-9 MEAC) can secure the fourth and final Southern Division seed to the 2015 MEAC Softball Tournament with a sweep of Sunday's doubleheader against the Aggies. However, NCAT (13-28, 5-8) can eliminate the Lady Eagles and advance to the postseason with just one win in Sunday's twin bill that will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday's games also serve as Senior Day for NCCU.

Wilson crushed her sixth homer of the season to right field to lead off the bottom of the fourth to break a scoreless deadlock. Sophomore Brianna Hampton nearly went yard just two batters later ripping a long double just feet shy of the right-field fence. Hampton stole third and then scored what proved to be the game winning run on the play after the catcher's throw down sailed into left field.

The Mooresville, North Carolina, resident was closing in on her third shutout but the Lady Eagles lone error allowed N.C. A&T to score an unearned run in the sixth. Sophomore Dasia Moore led off with a seeing-eyed single through the left side of the infield. Junior Kimberly Brunson followed with an infield single and Moore was able to move all the way to third on the play after NCCU committed a throwing error on the play. The Lady Eagles then allowed the run to score while turning a double play.

Wilson buckled down in the seventh with NCCU clinging to the one-run lead. After a fly out, Wilson (7-11) fanned the final two Aggies to seal her seventh win. Wilson's seven K's moved her season total over the century mark with 105 strikeouts.

Junior Janika May produced a quality start for the visitors allowing just one earned run in the losing effort. May (6-16) held NCCU to just five hits but her two extra-base hits allowed in the fourth proved costly.

Junior Casey Hargett had the Lady Eagles first base knock with a single in the third to extend her hit streak to six games. Classmate Kayleigh Brueck followed with a single to push Hargett into scoring position but May got out of the jam with a pop out in foul territory.

Wilson had NCCU's final hit with a single in the sixth to finish her day 2 for 3 from the plate.

NCAT held a 6-5 hit edge but all six base hits allowed by Wilson were singles.
