NCCU SOFTBALL BLANKED BY WILDCATS, 7-0

Lady Eagles shutout by the league favorites for a second time

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior right fielder Casey Hargett tallied two of the Lady Eagles three hits in a 7-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball loss to Bethune-Cookman University on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Parkwood Athletic Field.

The Wildcats collected 10 hits and took advantage of five errors by the Lady Eagles to complete the three-game series sweep. B-CU (13-24 Overall, 6-0 MEAC) has won seven straight games and NCCU (14-20, 0-6) has lost eight consecutive contests.

Sophomore starting pitcher Sabrina Anguiano continued to be the story for the victorious Wildcats. Anguiano (10-20) was the winning pitcher in all three B-CU wins and she improved to 6-0 in MEAC tilts.

Anguiano got plenty of run support as Bethune-Cookman tallied a run in five of seven innings including at least one run each of the first four frames. Senior Calesha Shelley paced the Wildcats from the leadoff position going 4 for 4 with two stolen bases, two runs and one RBI.

Hargett, who doubled to left-center in the second and then found the gap in right field for a single in the sixth, has a five-game hit streak for the Lady Eagles.
NCCU had a couple other opportunities to score but the Maroon and Gray finished with six runners left on base. Junior Kayleigh Brueck had a two-out double down the left field line in the third and the Lady Eagles put two runners on base in the fifth when junior De'Onna Smith reached on an error and moved to second on a fielder's choice sac bunt by senior Tiphani Jackson.

Anguiano, who struck out five, managed to get out of all three innings where NCCU runners were in scoring position without damage for her third shutout. Anguiano was aided by some strong defensive plays including a pair of great catches in the third when the third baseman made a diving catch on a foul ball and then the right fielder stole an extra base hit from senior Emerie Germ by making a leaping catch on the hard liner.

Junior London Booker pitched for the Lady Eagles and was tagged with the loss despite only three of her seven runs allowed being earned.

NCCU will continue MEAC play with another home series against South Carolina State University over the weekend of April 11-12. The Lady Eagles will host the Bulldogs for three games including a doubleheader on Saturday (1:00/3:00 PM) and the series finale on Sunday (12:00 PM).
