LADY EAGLES FALL TO THE PHOENIX, 6-1, FRIDAY

Brianna Hampton drove in NCCU's lone run

ELON, N.C. – A quartet of Elon University pitchers held North Carolina Central University to just four singles in a 6-1 non-conference softball victory at Hunt Softball Park Friday afternoon.

The Phoenix improved to 13-6 overall and 9-1 at home. The Lady Eagles slip back to .500 at 7-7.

Elon took the initial lead with an unearned run in the first before NCCU was able to even the score with its only run in the top of the second. Juniors Kayleigh Brueck and Demiree Briones led off with consecutive singles before a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brianna Hampton allowed Brueck to tag up from third and score.

The Phoenix quickly regained the lead in the home half of the second that featured a two-run triple by sophomore Alaina Hall.

Trailing 4-1, the Lady Eagles brought the potential tying run up to bat with two outs in the sixth after a pair of base hits by junior Casey Hargett and senior Emerie Germ. However, Elon senior reliever Caitlin O'Shea took over in the pitcher's circle and wiggled the Phoenix out of the dangerous situation by inducing an inning-ending groundout.

Hall tacked on her third RBI with a single to cap a two-run sixth as the hosts pulled out to the five-run advantage. Hall had three of Elon's nine hits.
Sophomore Allie Burdette (1-1) was credited with the win after tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of freshman starter Kiandra Mitchum, who was not eligible for the win going just three innings instead of the minimum four required of a starter.

Sophomore Dominique Wilson (2-4) went the distance for the Lady Eagles but took the loss allowing all six runs (five earned) on nine hits and five walks.

North Carolina Central returns home for a three-game weekend series against Coppin State University beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. and concluding with the finale on Sunday at Noon.
