SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior
Chantal Thomas led North Carolina Central University with 10 points but the Lady Eagles shot an icy 22.2-percent from the floor in a 60-37 non-conference road loss at Wofford College on Tuesday afternoon inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Junior forward Grayson Pinholser notched her first double-double of the season and freshman guard Chloe Wanick netted 12 points as the Terriers won their second straight game. Wofford (3-7 Overall) shot nearly 15 points higher than NCCU at 36.7-percent and came up with a season-high 13 steals to post its most lopsided victory.
NCCU (1-7) was playing without junior guard
Morgan Jones due to injury. Jones, who ranks first or second on the team in points, assists and steals; did not play for the first time in her collegiate career. She had played in 66 straight games prior to Tuesday, including a streak of 37 consecutive starts.
Thomas bucketed a team-high 10 points and has now reached double figures in three of her first eight games representing the Maroon and Gray. Thomas also came up with three steals.
Senior
Tisha Dixon and freshman
Deja McCain scored seven points apiece for the Lady Eagles and senior
Kristin Askew and junior
Monique Whaley-Briggs both tallied five points for the visitors. McCain's seven points and her team-high seven rebounds were both season-high marks for the rookie.
NCCU remained winless on the road at 0-5 by making just 12 of 54 field goal attempts and committing 25 turnovers. Wofford outscored the Lady Eagles, 22-7, on points off miscues, including a 10-0 mark on fast-break points.
The contest started off very slowly with both squads shooting under 20-percent in the first quarter. A floater by Thomas in the final minute provided NCCU with its third lead of the period at 8-7 but junior Maria Corella nailed her second 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Terriers a slim 10-8 edge after 10 minutes.
Askew drilled a deep 3-pointer from the left wing as the shot clock was expiring on NCCU's opening possession of the second quarter to give the Lady Eagles their fourth and final lead at 11-10.
Pinholser scored the game's next seven points to pull Wofford ahead 17-11. NCCU missed eight consecutive shots during that stretch and settled for just 5 of 28 (17.9%) shooting in the half to fall behind by 10, 25-15, at halftime.
Pinholser led the Terriers in to the locker room with eight points and eight rebounds.
Wofford scored the first four points of the second half and remained ahead by double figures for the last 20 minutes. The Terriers cushion grew to as many as 27 in the fourth quarter before coasting down the stretch.
NCCU returns to South Carolina for two more non-conference games before the holiday break. The Lady Eagles will play at USC Upstate on Saturday (2 PM) and Presbyterian College (5 PM) on Monday.
