Written by Staci Green DURHAM, N.C. – With energized fans in full effect, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team triumphed in a comeback victory, 66-59, against the Delaware State University Hornets on Monday, Jan. 26 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
This is the first time NCCU (5-15, 3-5 MEAC) has won back-to-back games since Nov. 20, 2013.
Racquel Davis led the Lady Eagles with her eighth double-double of the season, amassing 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Morgan Jones followed behind Davis in scoring with 14 points. Jones managed to shoot 50 percent from beyond-the-arc (3-for-6).
The game clock read 17:52 in the second half, and the Lady Eagles were down by eight points, at 26-34. NCCU is no stranger to being down after halftime.
Jones hit a nothing-but-net three-point shot to begin the Lady Eagles' come back, and on cue, the NCCU fans yelled in support.
NCCU created eight unanswered points against Delaware State (3-15, 1-5 MEAC) to bring the contest to a 34-point tie, with16:00 on the clock.
A shot from the 3-point line by Jones gave NCCU its first lead of the half, at 37-36. The clock ticked down to 13:52.
During the comeback, the Lady Eagles gained a 16-2 advantage, and stretched the Hornets deficit to 42-36.
NCCU was back in the game.
At 8:09, the Lady Eagles were ahead, 50-42, thanks to a layup contribution from Davis.
Two free-throw shots by
Rachel Williams took the Lady Eagles from a three-point advantage, to five points. The final seconds were on the clock.
Khyra Conerly forced a Delaware State turnover and came down court to up the score to 66-59, with eight seconds remaining.
NCCU held on to earn another conference win, with a final score of 66-59.
The Lady Eagles have the rest of the week off, and return home to the hardwood on Monday, Feb. 2, against Florida A&M University at 5:30 p.m.
