Freeman Collected Season-Best 28 Points over SCSU

DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt senior Jessica Freeman's (Charlotte, N.C.) 28-point performance helped guide the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to its largest  Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory of the season as the Lady Eagles (10-17, 5-9 MEAC) defeated the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (7-17, 5-9 MEAC) 60-43 on Saturday, March 1 in McDougald-McLendon Gym.

Following Senior Day festivities honoring Freeman and fellow senior Tiffany Gary (Delray Beach, Fla.), Freeman collected a new season-high connecting on 9-for-19 from the field, 4-for-9 from behind the arc and 6-for-7 from the free throw line while also pulling down four boards and snatching two steals.

The Lady Eagles started out hot, taking a 7-0 lead over the Lady Bulldogs in the opening two minutes of action.

SCSU answered with a 9-2 run to the tie the contest at nine with 15:04 on the first half clock.

As NCCU struggled to find its offensive momentum the Lady Bulldogs added on to their run scoring six additional points giving them their largest lead of the contest 15-9, with 11:24 on the clock.

Sophomore Tisha Dixon (Kinston, N.C.) ended the Lady Eagles five-minute scoring drought as rookie Alexus Hynes (Houston, Texas) connected with Dixon on the block at the 11:01 mark.

A 16-5 run for NCCU ended first half action as the Lady Eagles took a 26-19 advantage into the intermission.

At the half Freeman led all-scorers with seven points.

SCSU started the second half with a shot from behind the arc from Cabriel Duren in the opening seconds of action to cut NCCU's lead to four.

The Lady Eagles answered when Duren fouled Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) at the 18:28 mark and the junior knocked down one-of-two shots from the charity stripe.

Over the next minute and a half Freeman knocked down three unanswered shots from three point land putting NCCU on top by 14.

The ten-point surge was enough to keep the Lady Eagles offensive booming for the remainder of the contest as NCCU pulled ahead by as many as 19 points at the 2:50 mark.
The 17-point, 60-43 victory marks the Lady Eagles largest MEAC triumph during the 2013-14 season.

In addition to Freeman, Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned her 12th double-double of the season as the junior scored 12 points and led the game on the boards with 14 rebounds.

Duren led the way for the Lady Bulldogs on the offensive end collecting a team-best 14 points and six assists while Cherisha Floyd pulled down a team-high 12 boards during the SCSU shortcoming.

As a team, NCCU shot 19-for-50 from the field (38.0%), 6-for-15 from behind the arc (40.0%), 16-for-20 from the free throw line (80.0%), outrebounded the conference foe 42-37, collected nine assists, five blocks and six steals.

NCCU wraps up home competition on Monday, March 3 as the Lady Eagles host Savannah State in McDougald-McLendon Gym at 4 p.m.
