JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Carolina Central University junior
Willie Calvin finished in a tie for 14th place in the men's high jump at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championship Competition on Saturday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., just shy of the 12th place performance he needed to advance to the national championship event in Iowa.
Calvin, the 2012 MEAC indoor high jump champion out of Greenville, Miss., leaped over the bar set at 2.16 meters (7' 1" - a season-high) to earn the best finish by any of the five NCCU student-athletes attending the university's first appearance at the NCAA Championships as a Division I program.
Phillip Barren, a junior sprinter from Raleigh, N.C., posted the next highest NCCU performance by placing 41st in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.63.
Nealie Whitt, a native of Roxboro, N.C., who broke the MEAC championship meet record to capture the 2012 discus throw conference title, capped his collegiate career by placing 42nd in the men's discus throw with a toss of 45.26m (148' 6").
Sararesa Hudson, a sophomore from Burgaw, N.C., placed 47th in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.02, while junior
Jasmine Wanamaker, an all-MEAC performer during the outdoor season, was disqualified in the women's 100m hurdles.
