CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track and field teams collected a total of 17 top-five performances during the Taylor/Hilton Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina this Saturday, April 14, in Chapel Hill, N.C., at Belk Track.
Lady Eagle sophomore
Delesha Conquest and Eagle junior
Phillip Barren posted the sole individual first place finishes on the women’s and men’s side. Conquest, the Newark, Del., native earned her first place victory during the women’s 400 meter hurdles finishing with a time of one minute and 2.93 seconds. Barren, the Raleigh, N.C., local, captured his gold during the men’s 200m dash, crossing the finish line in 21.62.
The Lady Eagles 4x400m relay ‘A’ team consisting of Conquest,
Ashley McCoy,
Ikea Long and #La’Creesha Gore# also earned a first place finish in Chapel Hill with a time of 3:51.31.
McCoy, the junior standout from Wilmington, N.C., captured a second place finish on the day, finishing the women’s 100m dash in 11.63. Fellow Lady Eagle, Gore, finished the women’s 200m dash with a time of 24.27, also earning her second place.
The Lady Eagles took home three of the top-five finishes during the women’s 100m hurdles. Junior
Jasmine Wanamaker finished in second place during the event (14.41), while junior
Anthonia Ballard took home third place (14.83) and Conquest placed fourth (15.36).
The foursome of Ballard, Wanamaker,
Regina Summerville and
Syrita Hunt earned bronze during the women’s 4x400m relay with a clock time of 3:59.70.
The freshmen duo of Summerville and
Amber Brooks rounded out the top-five on the track for the Lady Eagles. Summerville finished fourth during the women’s 400m hurdles (1:04.32), while Brooks finished in fifth during the women’s 800m run (2:18.98).
Senior
Paig Robinson earned NCCU’s lone top-five field performance on the women’s side finishing in fifth place during the women’s javelin throw with a 33.84 meter throw (111 feet).
In addition to Barrens first place victory, on the men’s side NCCU finished with four other top-five performances.
The men’s 4x100m relay ‘A’ team comprised of Barren,
Brandon Addison,
Jaye Pratt and
Snonsio Boye-Weah and the men’s 4x400m relay ‘A’ team made up of Addison, Barren,
Jamar Jones and
Greg Roper both captured silver during the meet with times of 41.14 and 3:12.50 respectively.
Freshmen Pratt, the Durham, N.C. native, earned fourth place during the men’s 100m dash with a time of 10.91. While Jones, the senior out of Philadephia, Pa., completed the top-five performances on the track for his men’s squad landing a fifth place finish during the men’s 400m dash (48.53).
Junior standout
Willie Calvin, who currently leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the men’s high jump, finished in third place during the invitational with a leap of 2.05m (6ft, 8.75 in).
The NCCU men’s and women’s squads return to the track April 20, in Greensboro, N.C., as they participate in the International Friendship and Freedom Games.
