RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track & field teams combined for 14 top ten performances during the annual Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State on Friday and Saturday at Paul Derr Track in Raleigh, N.C.
“There was tough competition, but we were in the mix with everyone,” said NCCU track & field head coach
Michael Lawson. “Most of our performances this weekend were better. We had a number of PRs (personal records) and a lot of MEAC qualifiers."
Although NCCU had a host of quality individual efforts, junior sprinter
Ashley McCoy had the most impressive weekend. The Wilmington, N.C., native was the 200-meter dash runner-up with a time of 23.59 seconds, only two one-hundredths of a second behind the event winner. She also recorded the third-fastest time of 11.54 in the 100m dash preliminaries, then placed fourth in the finals in 11.81.
Sophomore
Delesha Conquest placed fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.12, while also finishing the 100m hurdles in 14.91 seconds for 23rd place.
Junior
Jasmine Wanamaker advanced to the finals of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.15, then improved on that mark in the finals with a 14.06 to place seventh. Fellow hurdler
Sararesa Hudson crossed the finish line of the 400m hurdles in 1:03.15 to place eighth.
Freshman
Amber Brooks landed in sixth place in the 1500m run by recording a time of 4:48.33, while sophomore jumper
Alexis Sherrill rounded out the top 10 performers with a ninth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.36 meters (34-feet, 0 inches).
Other NCCU women in the top 20 were senior
Paig Robinson in the javelin (11th, 36.87m) and sophomore Ciara Houston in the 400m dash (17th, 55.94).
Headliners for the NCCU men were senior transfer
Orolando Duffus and junior
Phillip Barren. Duffus placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.92m (48-11.5) and was the top Eagle in the long jump by finishing 13th with a distance of 6.72m (22-0.75).
Barren posted the sixth-fastest time of 21.79 seconds in the 200m dash, and the seventh-fastest time of 10.68 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100m dash. In the finals of that event, he settled for 13th place with a time of 11.08.
The two other top 10 performers for the Eagles were senior
Nealie Whitt in the discus throw, placing ninth with a toss of 49.77m (163-3), and junior
Nana Atakora-Bediako in the triple jump with a measurement of 14.27m (46-10). Atakora-Bediako also placed 19th in the long jump (6.42m), while senior
Kendall DeLapp ranked 15th in the long jump at 6.64m.
Sophomore
Brandon Addison had a busy weekend, placing 15th in the 200m dash with a time of 22.64 and 15th in the 400m dash with a time of 47.90. He also teamed up with Barren,
Jaye Pratt and
Snonsio Boye-Weah in the 4x100m relay to finish fourth with a time of 41.15.
The NCCU women also finished in the top 10 in both relay events. The 4x800m relay squad of Brooks,
Taisha Parkins,
Ikea Long and
Dreanna Wallace placed seventh with a time of 9:23.58. The 4x400m relay unit of Houston, Conquest, Hudson and #La’Creesha Gore# finished ninth in 3:47.63.
“We are on our way to being a real good team,” Lawson said. “We are not far away, but we do have a lot of work ahead of us.”
NCCU returns to the track on Friday and Saturday, April 6-7 for the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
