Game Notes: NCCUW at South Carolina State
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - For their final road contest of the 2011-12 season, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University battle South Carolina State University in the Palmetto State on Monday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Organgeburg, S.C.
As NCCU embarks on its 11
th all-time meeting with the Lady Bulldogs, the mighty maroon hopes to even out the season’s series with a win.
On Monday, Feb. 12, SCSU defeated NCCU 78-52 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium. In the home upset, junior offensive leader Chasidy Williams notched 1-of-8 double-doubles with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Kabrina Truesdale and sophomore Tenika Neely scored seven points apiece.
Following that contest, the maroon and gray dropped to 3-24 overall and 1-13 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, which includes a 43-59 loss to Savannah State on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Savannah, Ga. SCSU is currently 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference, with a Saturday, Feb. 25 101-61 loss to North Carolina A&T in Orangeburg, S.C.
In the Lady Eagles loss to SSU, Williams led the team with 13 points, while coming up one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Neely added eight points to the offense, as senior Blaire Houston circulated five assists.
NCCU was 39 percent from the field on 14-of-36 shooting, 4-of-10 from the long range and 46 percent from the free-throw line on 11-of-24 shooting.
During SCSU’s 40-point loss to the Lady Aggies, Tiara Knotts led the offense with 16 points, while Cabriel Duren scored 11 points and Tracey Flowers and Tiana Hemphill pulled down five rebounds apiece.
On the season, NCCU is 36 percent from the field on 496-of-1365 shooting, 77-of-263 from behind the arc, and 59 percent from the charity stripe, 288-of-486. Williams guides NCCU with 392 points, 197 rebounds, 61 steals and 19 blocks, while Houston leads in assists with 49.
South Carolina State is 39 percent from the field on 566-of-1441 shooting, 76-of-284 from the behind the arc, and 61 percent from the free-throw line, 332-of-546. Knotts paces the squad with 325 points, 93 assists and 59 steals, as Hemphill has grabbed 201 rebounds and Paris Alston has blocked 21 shots.
