Women’s Basketball Looks for MEAC Win Number Two

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University look to end the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekend with two wins as they take on the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Monday, Feb. 13 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
 
NCCU (3-21) and SCSU (10-11) meet for the 10th time in school history, with the Lady Bulldogs leading the series 7-2.  At the end of the 2010-11 campaign, SCSU attained two series with a 66-32 win over NCCU on Dec. 4 in Orangeburg, S.C., and 47-41 victory on March 3, in Durham, N.C.
 
In the March 3 loss, Lady Eagle graduate Shanise Blanks led the team with 12 points, while junior Chasidy Williams notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and NCCU graduate Jori Nwachukwu pulled down 11 rebounds.
 
The mighty maroon welcomes the Georgia-based MEAC foes after clutching a 12-point victory over Savannah State, senior Blaire Houston added five rebounds and three assists to her career-high 19-point performance, while tallying a season-high 9-of-10 outing from the charity stripe and shooting 2-of-3 from the long range.  Junior Chasidy Williams added 16 points, three steals and four blocks to NCCU’s first conference win, as sophomore Lakisha Evans pulled down 10 rebounds.
 
The Lady Eagles finished the competition shooting 30 percent from the field on 13-of-44, 46 percent from the long range and 70 percent from the free-throw line on a 19-of-27 effort. 
 
On the season, NCCU is 37 percent from the field on 444-of-1211 shooting, 68-of-224 from behind the arc, and 60 percent from the charity stripe, 261-of-434.  Williams guides NCCU with 336 points, 163 rebounds, 59 steals and 18 blocks, while Houston leads in assists with 44.
 
South Carolina State hits the McDougald-McLendon hardwood with a two-game winning streak in its favor, which includes a 71-68 victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Greensboro, N.C.  Tiara Knotts led the victory with 18 points, as Tiana Hemphill seized 12 rebounds.
 
The Lady Bulldogs were 45 percent from the field on 30-of-67, 2-of-7 from the long range, and 47 percent from the free-throw line, 9-of-19. 
 
On the season, SCSU is shooting 39 percent from the field on 464-of-1187 shooting, 57-of-228 from the long range and 61 percent from the charity stripe, 282-of-462. 
 
Lady Eagle supporters can continue their contributions to NCCU head coach Joli Robinson’s “Share the Warmth” campaign, by donating new to gently used outerwear and blankets throughout the 2011-12 season.  Donation bins can be found at the main entrances of the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
