HOWARD STEALS AND REBOUNDS LEAD TO 67-26 NCCU LOSS

The Lady Eagles remain winless in MEAC competition

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – With Howard University out rebounding the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles 44-19 and forcing 21 maroon and gray turnovers, NCCU concluded the Monday, Jan. 16 contest with a 26-67 loss to HU in Washington, D.C.

Lady Eagle senior Blaire Houston topped the team with nine points, while junior Chasidy Williams followed with six points.  Sophomore Tenika Neely distributed two assists, as Williams stole three possessions and sophomore Alesha Jenkins pulled down six rebounds.

Williams opened the contest scoring the first layup of night at the 19:39 mark, for an opening 2-0 lead over HU.
The Lady Bison quickly responded with a layup by Saadia Doyle, who paced the host squad on a 6-0 run for a four–point lead.

NCCU’s Neely snapped the run with a long range basket at the 16:28 mark.
HU hit another run, leaving the maroon and gray scoreless for 10 minutes of competition with a 10-0 run for a score of 27-7.

Williams netted a layup at the 5:14 mark to break the scoring drought, while Houston concluded the first-half Lady Eagle offense with a basket from the charity stripe.

By the halftime intermission, Howard held the Lady Eagles to a season-low 10 points for a halftime score of 39-10.
Houston returned to the Burr hardwood determined to elevate the mighty maroon offense.  The senior scored five of the Lady Eagles’ 16 second-half points.

While Doyle’s offensive effort began to decrease, Tamoria Holmes’ effort increased, and the 3-of-5 from the behind the arc shooter led the squad to a final 67-26 victory over the Lady Eagles.

The maroon and gray finished the night at 24 percent from the field on 9-of-38 shooting, 2-of-8 from behind the arc, and 40 percent from the charity stripe, 6-of-15.
 
HU’s Holmes attained a team-high 23 points, as Doyle assisted in the win with 21 points.  Leading the dominant rebounding effort was Nicole Deterville, who pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lady Bison, as Cheyenne Curley-Payne circulated seven assists and gathered four steals.

Howard was 47 percent from the field on 27-of-58, 5-of-13 from the long range, and 89 percent from the free-throw line, 8-of-9.

NCCU drops to 2-15 on the season and 0-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, as the Lady Bison advance to 13-6 on the season, 6-1 in the MEAC and 2-0 in the series.

The Lady Eagles return to road action, as they take on Coppin State (Saturday, Jan. 21) and Morgan State (Monday, Jan. 23) in Baltimore, Md.
